Aqua Phyto

Aqua Phyto We supply high quality Phytoplankton, live fish food and home culturing equipment. Most of these are high priced and require constant care and repeat purchase.

We have been breeding fish for over 10 years and the main thing we have learned, is every type of fish has it's own nutritional requirement. Here at Aqua Phyto, we pride ourselves in supplying top quality products, but also, supplying our customers with the knowledge and support they will need in culturing most food chains that you will require to feed your fish.

TOP TIP FOR TUESDAY

On a natural coral reef, phytoplankton are an abundant food source for many clams (and other bivalves), soft corals, sponges and zooplankton like copepods. In the home marine aquarium however, phytoplankton are generally not present. Those aquarists in favor of dosing phytoplankton, therefore, are attempting to provide this natural food source to the invertebrates in their tanks.

The argument for dosing phytoplankton is generally based on two principles:

Phytoplankton are a natural food for many filter feeding invertebrates
Dosing phytoplankton provides a nutritional boost for the clams, filter-feeding corals and other beneficial invertebrates like copepods in their marine aquarium

Picking Your Nose and Eating it.
Why would anyone pick their nose and eat it? Well here is the answer.
Because it’s easy. If you don’t pick your nose and eat it you have to get a tissue then blow rummage delve repeat then you have to dispose of the snot covered wipe. By picking your nose you simply Pick and chew job done.
Yer I know it’s not pleasant but for best results and minimal effort it’s the bee’s knees.
Keeping marine fish and corals is a lot like this. There’s an easy and a hard way to do most things. The only difference is the easy way cost big bucks and the hard way takes time and effort.
For instance: Algae let’s face it algae is something we all struggle with. A nice red slime or a big hairy thing that makes you rock look like it’s in the early stages of a mid life crisis and has just returned from the wig makers.
Now the easy way is to pop to your local fish shop and buy a bottle of glupe that promises to kill reduce annihilate and destroy all things that don’t belong in your tank. So you rush home and empty the bottle in the tank (even though the bottle says “enough To Treat 1000 gallons” your sure your algae problem is Extreme) Sure enough within 10 days your 30 gallon tank is clear the algae is gone.
Well done now sit back and enjoy your clean tank. Oh by the way you just picked your nose and ate it. Yep you’re a picker and once a picker always a picker. That’s right I’m afraid. In a month or so that red slime and the hairy stuff will come right back and BOOM your back to picking.
Now the hard way. Start by not feeding your fish so much. Face up to facts your clown fish will never bond with you and your yellow tang has plenty of wig to eat. That’s right you’re not making your fish happy your feeding the hair algae and the red stuff. Only feed your fish what they can eat because whats left over is algae food. BE CAREFULL this next bit is important we are now going to deal with detritus. This is BAD detritus is Food and Waste in your tank that has settled in a dead spot with no flow. Once it has settled it gets board becomes depressed and finally has a breakdown. This breakdown is important because when it breaks down it turns into phosphates and that the algae food we have been talking about. You could try moving your live rock to improve your flow. If you can’t move your rock try moving your power heads. Now to the real power play in the war against algae. I am talking about the S.A.S and Delta Force Rolled into one yep you got it CODE RED give me a full SITREP and deploy the cleanup crew. They may not carry machine guns or be able to call in air strikes but hermit crabs and snails are simply the best they take all the stuff that will become detritus and turn it into Solid Gold (only joking about the gold thing) but you cannot have a reef tank without a cleanup crew unless you actually like picking your nose.
To Sum up Mother Nature gave us ways to deal with algae like Refugiums or hermit crabs and although it takes time and hard work you can reach a balance that works for your tank. Or you can take a finger stick it up your nose and consume...

You’re Choice.
