This is a really special moment. Fern is having a NAP! And she’s actually snoring 😴

Since she arrived in the UK, Fern’s new mum hasn’t had a moment of peace - quite literally - the barking hasn’t stopped. I was contacted by the marvellous Crystal, of Affinity Dog Behaviour & Training, to see if I could help - things were already at crisis point.

I met with Fern’s mum the next day, and together we came up with a new plan to manage Fern’s energy levels, give her outlets for some of her less desirable behaviours, and to aid human-dog communication. I was so impressed by how open minded she was, and things felt a lot more hopeful after our session.

Being able to settle down for a short time like this is a big breakthrough. It’s such a great start, and shows that Fern is responding nicely to her new routine and the changes we’ve made already. Things will get better and better from here, I’m sure of it! It’ll take time and patience, but we can get there 💪

Well done beautiful Fern 💖🐾

My dogs are my life.

Are they perfect?

No.

But neither am I!

Perfection is an illusion anyway,

and what we have is much more fun.

March to the beat of your own drum,

nothing else matters ❤️🐾

This week I started a behaviour package with this little dude - meet Reggie! 😍

Our boy Reggie has problems with people coming into his house.. as you can see from the photo, he’s very loving and trusting with his family, but visitors are currently an absolute NOPE from Reg. We’re going to change that!

With cases like this, working remotely works really well. If I turned up at Reggie’s house, we’d spend the whole session with a barky and upset dog, and the time would be spent dealing with Reggie dealing with me! I never want to put any dog under stress, or cause them discomfort, so the work will be done without me being present. Later on, we’ll be introducing some reliable stooges, but for now we’re laying the foundations to set Reggie up for success.

Updates to come! 😍🐾

People often ask me about the BEST lead for their dog. And the answer is, there’s no simple answer!

I prefer a slightly longer lead - 3 or 4 metres for my dogs - as it allows them plenty of space to sniff, but also lets me have a bit of control and maintain proximity. A short, tight lead feels really restrictive to me, and my dogs don’t like it much.

But of course, there are times when your dog needs to be really close to your side - beside a busy road for example - and some people might not feel comfortable handling a longer lead during those times. In that case, a short lead is totally fine. Pick the lead that works best for the situation! Safety first.

I work with a lot of dogs that struggle with lead frustration, and we often find that the looser the lead, the more control the dog feels they have over interactions with others, and this can really reduce tension. The lead is there for our dogs’ safety, but it can also be used as a tool to communicate, calm and help our dogs in positive ways.

One thing that the lead should NEVER be is a punitive tool - lead jerks and hanging dogs by the neck (yes, I’ve seen someone doing this) are always unacceptable. When dogs are on lead, we should always strive to make it as comfortable and positive an experience as possible.

And then there’s the dreaded flexi lead… not my favourite thing, but they can have their place with dogs that have already been lead trained and don’t pull! Ideally, I’d prefer a static lead, but I won’t go mad at clients who use the flexi 😂

What type of lead do you prefer? 💖🐾

Sweet, gentle Lucy is doing so well 😍

I first met Lucy a fortnight ago, just before I went on holiday, and she’s grown in confidence during that time. She lay on her sofa and fell asleep while I was there, and also managed to eat some treats I gave her! 💖

With very shy dogs like Lucy, I’m always looking for teeny tiny signs of progress, and I saw so many when I saw her this week. She really has the best people guiding her along the way too, she’s a lucky girl. I’m very honoured to be part of her journey!

At the moment she’s working on getting used to her harness, and then… walkies time! 😁💖

Darling Eddie is doing so well! 😍 He’s been learning some new things, which he’s really enjoyed, and he’s taken to clicker training like a pro. He’s also completely fine with his dad now, which was an issue before, and his loose lead walking is improving.

Our next project is helping Eddie get used to having visitors over. It’s a common issue with Romanian dogs, and we’ve got a plan of action to help him feel safe and understand what’s expected. He’ll be working on his plan while I go off on a break, and we’ll catch up when I’m back ❤️🐾
