PLEASE ENSURE YOUR FOOD WASTE BIN IS LOCKED SHUT WHEN PUT OUTSIDE.
Mouldy food is toxic to dogs & cats. Cooked bones can cause serious & lethal internal injuries if eaten
There will be a position that you leave the handle of your bin in to lock the lid shut. Mine requires the handle to be down at the front. Keeping the lid locked shut will help keep local pets safe and reduce the chance of attracting rats.

🗑️ LANCASHIRE’S NEW FOOD WASTE BINS: A Warning to Pet Owners! 🐾

With the new weekly food waste recycling collections rolling out across Lancashire — including Preston, South Ribble, and West Lancashire — many households now have outdoor food caddies in their gardens.

While this is fantastic for the environment 🌍, it also introduces a hidden danger for pets and local wildlife: Mycotoxin Poisoning.

🚨 THE DANGER OF MOULDY FOOD
Mouldy leftovers — especially bread, dairy, nuts, and rotting meat — can produce toxic substances called mycotoxins. If a curious dog, cat, fox, or other wildlife gets into an unsecured food bin, ingesting even a small amount can be extremely dangerous.

⚠️ Symptoms can develop rapidly and may include:
• Severe vomiting and drooling
• Stumbling, wobbling, or appearing “drunk”
• Muscle tremors and twitching
• Seizures
• Hyperthermia (overheating)

❗ Mycotoxin poisoning is a veterinary emergency and can be fatal without urgent treatment.

🛡️ HOW TO KEEP PETS & WILDLIFE SAFE
✅ Always lock the outdoor caddy lid using the forward-click handle
✅ Store bins securely where possible — especially if you have determined pets or active wildlife nearby
✅ Stay vigilant on walks for discarded food waste or split bags on kerbsides

So today, although significantly cooler, it is still too hot for my dog to spend a significant amount of time walking & running around in the sun. So, we headed out to our favourite shady lane and did an on lead training walk instead. We walked the length of the lane practising walking to heal on a lose lead & used the shade to dictate pace change - shade = slow pace & sun = fast pace. There was more shade than sun so we both stayed cool & it meant we were doing more at a slow pace which was much more of a mental challenge for her & would mean despite it being a shorter than normal walk & not off lead, she would be tired from the mental effort of our walk. When we retraced our steps to head back home, I rewarded her for her hard work & concentration with a break from healing & allowed her to sniff all the sniffs she wanted - just a little bit more mental stimulation to tire her out for a while! 🙂 She’ll get an off lead walk this evening when the temperature has dropped a bit

This is really helpful guide and illustration of how to recognise & understand how your dog is feeling in the heat, so you can take steps to help them cool if they begin to show signs of overheating and ideally prevent them from getting to that point 🙂
