🌧️ Keeping cosy at Vets on the Beach! 🐾

As Storm Austen whistled through Exmouth today, our lovely patients found their own ways to keep warm during their visits to us!

There was snug pug Ronnie, tucked up inside his mum’s coat, pullover Pluto sporting his stylish jumper, and cool cats Minnie and Dennis, who opted for cuddles with our nurses while having their nails trimmed. 🐶🐱

Bertrum, however, decided the best place to shelter from the storm was at home… and who could blame him!

And of course, our very own Porto wasn’t going to let a little storm stop him, donning his bright yellow raincoat to brave the elements! 💛☔

We’d love to see how your four-legged friends have been keeping cosy today! Whether they’ve been wrapped up in their favourite jumper, sporting their raincoats or simply refusing to leave the sofa, share your photos in the comments below! 📸🐾

Beau is an English Lop, a relatively rare breed known for its distinctive ears, which can outgrow the rest of the body before they're even a month old!

We have had this lovely little cocker spaniel brought in to us, found down by the marina end of the beach. Unfortunately the details on the microchip are not up to date. Please get in touch if you are able to give any information that may help reunite with the owners

Coconut, Cinnamon and Toffee paid us a summertime visit this week for their health checks — and it’s fair to say they left quite an impression on us. 💙

Their visit started with the all-important weigh-in, followed by a full examination including their teeth, eyes, ears, heart and lungs, skin and coat, feet and general body condition.

And, of course, no visit to Vets on the Beach would be complete without a few well-earned snacks afterwards! 🥬

We see quite a few guinea pigs and other small pets at the practice, and although they may be little, their healthcare needs certainly aren’t.

Guinea pigs in particular can be very good at hiding when something isn’t quite right, so keeping an eye on their weight, appetite, teeth and normal behaviour at home can help spot problems early.

We’re pleased to report that this terrific trio all left with a clean bill of health — and definitely put a smile on our faces.

Meet the lovely Dotty, a Jack Russell cross who recently came to see us feeling lethargic, subdued and just not herself. Her owners had also noticed some unusual discharge from her back end.

Her symptoms immediately made us concerned about pyometra — a serious infection of the uterus which can make dogs very poorly and, without treatment, can become life-threatening.

We ran blood tests and performed an abdominal ultrasound, which confirmed our suspicions.

Dotty had a pyometra.

The safest option was surgery to remove the infected uterus and ovaries. Thankfully, everything went smoothly and Dotty recovered brilliantly. 💙

But her story didn’t quite end there.

Her blood tests also highlighted changes in her kidney function which required further attention. This gave us the opportunity to address something that hadn’t been causing obvious signs at home, and Dotty has now started a renal diet to support her kidneys going forward.

She’s recovered beautifully from her surgery and is back to being herself again. 🐾

💙 The takeaway?

Sometimes the problem that brings a patient through our doors isn’t the only thing we find.

For Dotty, investigating one potentially life-threatening condition allowed us to successfully treat her pyometra while also identifying another issue that we can now manage and monitor for the future.

It’s a lovely example of why we don’t just look at the obvious problem — we look at the whole patient. 💙

We had the pleasure of administering this beautiful litter of puppies Vaccination Course. This comprises of 2 vaccinations, 4 weeks apart, and it was lovely to see how much they had grown in the before and after pictures. They will now be covered for a year against Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus, and four strains of Leptospirosis. Have fun growing up puppies! We enjoyed your visits!

We've had an elderly cat brought in to us this evening. Found in Hawthorn Grove, Exmouth. The cat has a microchip, but it's not recognised. If you know who the owner might be, please get in touch with us, as we'd love to reunite them with their owners.

Say hello to Daphne who came in and had a nail trim whilst she was visiting Exmouth on holiday.
Daphne is normally nervous about visiting the Vet and Dragos wanted to make her feel as relaxed as possible, so he was able to cuddle and clip her claws on his lap to keep her calm. Don’t you just love her contented face! Thanks to her Owner for sharing her.
