Yesterday was a desperately sad day here at Wilde Life Animal Sanctuary and Rescue Centre...as our gorgeous Dandelion crossed over the rainbow 🌈 bridge 😥

It was totally unexpected, she had shown no signs whatsoever of being unwell, and was eating, drinking and hopping around as normal.

I let her out of her overnight hutch at 8.30am and she came out happily and started to check out the garden as she always did...but by 11am she had passed, peacefully laying stretched out next to her hutch as she often did 🤗 There wasn't a mark on her, or any sign she'd been in distress, which is at least some comfort.

Perfectly placed it was one of her favourite spots. She could see the dogs and me if we came out of the front door, our lovely neighbour Nick if he popped out with a few carrot sticks for her, and was just a few hops away from the front gate should one of her many fans stop to say 'hi' and give her a stroke, and maybe a dandelion leaf or two 😋

Dandelion was a re-home giant french lop, who joined us just 3 short months ago when her previous owner had to give her up for health reasons. She was the sweetest girl, and relished her new found freedom to hop, play, explore and snooze in our little garden after a life spent well fed, but shut up in a hutch far too small for her.

Whilst it would be nice to understand what had caused her to pass as she did, we have decided the cost of having a postmortem would be money better spent on the other rabbits in our care. Especially as it was Dandelion who really instigated us opening our doors to more rabbits in need of new forever homes as we realised just how many there are out there 🧡

We currently have the beautiful Ivy and her five 3 1/2 week old babies...rescued by the wonderful Angela and Gav and given into our care when the babies were just 4 days old 🥰 And on Friday we will be joined by two new boys, Casper from London, and Monty from Basingstoke, both currently owned by caring owners who through no fault of their own are unable to keep them, and are kindly trusting us with their future care 😊

Dandelion came into our lives at just the right moment and taught us so much about love and new beginnings. She has left us with a giant floppy eared paw shaped whole in our hearts...but also a legacy that will ensure many other bunnies in need get to live out their days in safety and love 💔

Ivy and the babies have just had a full cage clean, including everything being wiped with pet friendly disinfectant 🫧

The babies are 3 weeks 1 day now and all eating small amounts of hay, junior pellets and vege/fruit. They also have a small water bottle of their own placed low down, but I'm not sure they're really using it much yet.
They will continue to get milk from Ivy for another three weeks, and are taking water in through their greens and fruit too. But their water intake will increase naturally over time.

Despite becoming increasingly independent, they are still vulnerable to infection which is why it's important to keep our hygiene standards high... especially as we have other animals they are coming into contact with.

Ivy's milk contains important probiotics, and also helps protect them from disease in these first weeks, but they will all be vaccinated before leaving for their new adoption homes. We also have a probiotic supplement that can be added to their water if we have any concerns or feel it would be a useful boost.

Ivy had it in her first 10 days with us to help supplement her own diet. She was so poorly looked after before being rescued by Angela and Gav, and with being pregnant as well this will have taken a toll on her own nutrition. That said she has put on weight beautifully since her rescue and definitely seems fit, happy and healthy which is great 🥰

We spent some time introducing the Three D's and the Two D's today...and by the end of the afternoon even Dilly was standing next to the Two D's temporary run quietly! So feeling much more positive that the two little flocks will eventually be able to live happily together 🤞

We have a few boxes of fresh eggs available for sale at £1.50 for 6 eggs, if anyone is interested.

They can be found in the ‘Honesty Cooler Box’ pictured below, outside 60 Smith Field Road.

Help yourselves…there is a small plastic container for your payments, thank you 🥚

Some of you will have already met our original 3 D’s…Doris, Dilly & Dolly, ex-commercial hens who joined us here at Wilde Life from the BHWT in August this year. They spent a couple of weeks in the garden resting up and acclimatising to their new free life before moving to their permanent, super secure enclosure nearby where they have 24 hour access to a warm, cosy coop and fun filled run. They were not in the best condition when they arrived, but I'm thrilled to say they are all feathering up beautifully and are the funniest, most inquisitive little girls. They genuinely make us laugh every day with their antics 🐔

Three weeks ago Daisy and Delilah joined us from FSH. They arrived in a much better state of health, so we're able to take up residence in their new temporary accommodation straight away. They are both super chilled and the hope is to gradually introduce them to the 3 D flock, and the not so chilled flock leader Dilly 🤦 over the coming weeks! 🐔

Many of you have also asked about our 2 little rehome white call ducks, Fred & Bertie. They are such great characters and moved with the hens to their own new permanent, super secure enclosure with a play house, toys and mini pond where they are living their best life. They love to follow us around quacking away…and have recently started helping themselves to a quick swim in our little Wilde Life Pond 🦆

Dandelion, our gorgeous, friendly re-home black & white giant french lop is still in my garden patiently waiting for her new companion, our latest rescue, Ivy. She's always up for a ‘hello’ and a dandelion leaf at the gate if you're passing 🐰

Ivy was rescued from appalling conditions by a caring family in Torquay who saw her in a filthy dog crate, with no food or water when they went to look at a tortoise house at an address in Exeter. They bought her there and then and took her home where they cleaned her up and gradually removed all her matted, urine soaked fur. For personal reasons they were unable to offer Ivy a permanent home, and that is how she came to join us here at Wilde Life.

But, her story doesn't end there… The day we were due to collect her she unexpectedly gave birth! Ivy has currently taken up residence in my bedroom with her beautiful 5 babies who are now almost 3 weeks old and mum and babies are doing brilliantly 🥰

We will be looking for fully vetted ‘forever homes’ for these babies once they are old enough. They will be offered for adoption, and leave us with a lifetime guarantee that we will take them back, no questions asked, at any time should their new owners circumstances change. If you are interested in offering these little ones a new home we have just set up an adoption waiting list, so feel free to contact me at [email protected] for more information 😁
