Rocket’s official pre-dinner countdown routine! 🍲✨

He knows his bed is the place to wait, but that spaniel enthusiasm simply has to spin its way out while the bowl is being made.

What’s your dog’s dinner-time ritual - calm statue, tap-dancing paws, or full 360° spins like Rocket? Tell me below! 👇🐾

How I teach: 100mph puppy zoomies ➡️ a thoughtful pause ⏸️✨

These clever pups are working on their sit-stay!
I like to break training down into fun, bite-sized sections before putting the puzzle pieces together. Puppy brains get easily distracted, so keeping sessions short, sweet, and successful is everything.

Baby steps are key—build that foundation first, then gradually progress to more challenging environments and setups.

A massive well done to these pups who absolutely smashed it in class on Saturday! 🐾🌟

One of the best skills I taught my dog wasn’t a formal heel—it was learning that other dogs and people are none of his business. 🦆🏃🐮

Real socialisation isn’t about saying hello to everyone; it’s about neutrality.
Here is the simple, 3-step progression I used to build it:

1. Starting with zero distractions
I built focus where it’s effortless—in the kitchen or garden. We played quick, fun focus games like hand touches or simple orientation check-ins to make choosing me pure muscle memory before competing with the outside world. 🌍

2. Working at a safe distance
I took those focus games outside while being strict about distance. I found a spot where my dog could see people or dogs passing without staring, freezing, or lunging. The moment he noticed a trigger and voluntarily disengaged, I rewarded that calm choice. ⭐

3. Slowly closing the gap
I played with distance, only moving closer once my dog was relaxed and easily disengaging. If he locked on or struggled, it meant I had moved too close too soon—so we calmly took a few steps back to where he could succeed again. 😜

Calmness takes time, but taking the pressure off greetings transforms everyday walks. Practice makes progress! 🐾

🎓 It’s GRADUATION WEEK at Horton Dogs! 🐾

There is truly nothing better than handing over those well-deserved certificates and watching our incredible students celebrate their hard work. Whether wrapping up our Beginner courses or smashing through their Bronze, Silver, and Gold Grade Awards, every single dog and handler has achieved so much.

Training isn’t about robotic perfection—it’s about progress, clear communication, and building a brilliant bond. Seeing our students go from getting easily distracted to making great choices, nailing loose-lead walking, and mastering impulse control through games-based exercises is what it's all about.

A massive congratulations to all of this week’s graduates and their dedicated owners! You’ve put in the practice, embraced the journey, and the results speak for themselves. 🌟

A massive thank you for this lovely review! 🐾

There is truly nothing more rewarding than seeing the incredible progress people and their dogs make together.

This lovely couple had a few specific bits they wanted to work through, alongside the exciting (and busy!) challenge of preparing their home and dog for the arrival of a new baby. Over six tailored one-to-one sessions, they dedicated themselves to building calm routines, clear communication, and solid foundations to make sure the whole family was set up for success.

Here is what they had to say:

"Cathy has been absolutely brilliant with our 9-month-old Labrador, Rusti. Over six sessions, we’ve seen huge improvements, and we couldn’t be happier with the progress.

Cathy is incredibly calm, clear and patient, and all of the exercises were tailored specifically to Rusti and were easy for us to follow. Some of them produced almost instant results, which was fantastic to see and really helped us understand how to work with her.

We’re also expecting our first baby, so one thing we particularly appreciated was Cathy bringing her own pram so we could practise walking Rusti alongside it. It was such a thoughtful touch, and we now feel much more prepared for life with a new baby and an adolescent Labrador!

We’d highly recommend Cathy to anyone looking for a great dog trainer. The sessions are absolutely worth it, and the difference they’ve made to Rusti has been huge. Thank you, Cathy!"

Navigating big life changes with your dog takes patience, teamwork, and practical practice. Whether you are preparing for a new baby, tackling everyday manners, or setting your dog up to feel calm and confident at home, you don't have to figure it out alone.

Rocket is very used to training with high-speed distractions around! 😂 I was so impressed with his focus here, even with my 4-year-old son whizzing by and shouting "coming through!" Real-world manners aren't about sterile environments; they are about keeping your dog under control around distractions, which takes teamwork and practice. Need help building this kind of focus with your pup in Epsom & Ewell? Get in touch for some tailored one-to-one sessions! We will work at your dog's level and build their focus from there. Details for one-to-one sessions are on the comments below!

🐾 Out and about with your pup? Real-world manners start here!

Teaching our dogs to navigate everyday environments—like enjoying a relaxed park walk while respecting other park users—is a crucial part of raising a confident, well-mannered companion!
Whether you are walking past moving ducks, managing high-arousal triggers like footballs or children playing, or taking your dog off the path to execute a calm sit and focus while someone passes by, keeping your dog under control around distractions takes teamwork and practice.

Here is how we get there:
- Setting Up for Success: We use smart management to prevent bad habits from being rehearsed in the first place.
- Games-Based Training: We turn real-world manners into fun, effective exercises that fit seamlessly into daily life.
- Clear Communication: We teach the skills and build understanding first so our dogs truly know what we are asking of them.

It doesn't happen overnight, and there are no magic quick fixes—but practice makes progress! Celebrate those small wins every single day 🌟
