Recent remedial farriery job

The horse presented has been diagnosed with sarcoidosis by the vets and has been suffering with symptoms in relation to this ailment.

From a farriery stand point, due to the nature of this pathology any excessive concussion can have a detrimental affect on the coronet band (the uppermost structure of the hoof capsule) and in some cases even cause separation of the coronet.

Upon closer inspection of the hooves it was found that two heel cracks/separation were present in each outside heel, most likely caused by overloading of the area or imbalance of the hoof.

So in order to best support these particular hooves, allowing for a balanced and supported hoof, with loading spread across the whole hoof capsule we’ve decided that a glue on bar shoe would provide all of this, but with the addition of glue on as opposed to nailing we could remove the concussion caused through the nailing process and in doing so allow for the ongoing sarcoidosis symptoms, and as this horse is currently still in work we’ve selected a glue on bar shoe with the addition of an aluminium roller toe shoe insert to gently reduce excess wear while in the harder surfaces.

To do this we’ve opted to use an Easycare roller motion glue on shoe, with Adhere glue from Vettec with the addition of Glue - U soft impression material to cushion the hoof and support the capsule.

Remedial Farriery job from earlier in the week.

The horse presented has previously suffered from a bone fracture of the right hind and although this fracture has healed therapeutic shoeing is still required to help support the limb and maintain the hooves.

After discussion of the history of the horse presented with the customer and upon viewing of the hooves it is apparent that a mild NPA is present in both the fore and hinds. Also a considerable amount of compacted sole and atrophied frog was present in the hind feet specifically.

So to help correct and support the hooves we have opted to apply in front a pair of equilibrium side clip fronts with a 3D wedge pad and impression material to provide an eased breakover, maintain the correct angle of the pastern and cushion the sole.

With the hinds we have decided to use a open heeled graduated shoe to correct the angle of the pastern while leaving the sole and frog open and exposed to an open flow of oxygen in order to prevent sole compaction and frog infection.

Once shod we viewed the horse walking up, trotting up and turning on both a wide and tight circle and she presented sound at time of shoeing.

Remedial Farriery job from today.

Cossy the traditional cob presented here has been diagnosed laminitic by the vet and is displaying significant lameness.

Upon viewing of X-rays considerable rotation of the pedal bone is present.

After discussion with the client we have decided to first apply corrective trimming to remove excess heel growth and dress back the long toe to restore the correct balance and help improve the alignment of the pedal bone. This should help to reduce excess strain on the hoof capsule and the weakened laminae.

We have further opted to apply a glue on heart bar shoe to help provide greater comfort and stabilise the hoof capsule as much as possible. Also through glueing we have removed the need for nailing, reducing further concussion to an already inflamed hoof.

Cossy walked up much more freely after shoes were applied, and lameness was noticeably reduced.

Remedial Farriery job recently undertaken.

Horse presented (Ralph) has displayed 2/10 lameness when ridden. Upon discussion with the client, viewing of x-rays and under instruction of the veterinarian we have decided to apply a heel wedge to raise the angle of the hoof capsule.

Through this process we hope to relieve any excess strain to the tendons and ligaments, improve the gait/movement and provide overall support to hoof capsule.

Also we have fully bevelled the outer edge of the front shoes to facilitate a smooth and easy breakover in attempt to provide further comfort.

With the hind feet, the hoof walls have displayed significant bruising. In attempt to improve/reduce the factors causing the bruising we have applied a bar shoe to fully support the hoof capsule, this is now the third application of the bar shoes and the bruising has shown noticeable reduction and is continuing to improve.

Remedial Farriery job from this week.

Scooby the pony has been diagnosed laminitic and the application of clogs has been requested by the veterinarian.

Working alongside the client and vet and upon viewing of X-rays we have trimmed the hooves to help realign the correct angle of the distal phalanx after rotation caused by the laminitis.

We have then applied an edss clog to support the hoof and ease movement, with dental impression material added beneath the clog to provide added cushioning and support to the hoof.

Managed to brave the snow and apply a remedial shoe alteration for Daz the coloured pony today.

Daz presented with excessive wear to the toe section of hind shoe, and displayed significant stiffness in hind legs.

We have applied a set toe to the hind shoe to facilitate a smoother and easier break over, hopefully this will improve comfort and reduce the over wearing of hind toes.

Important message to all customers.

Due to the recent changes, and continued rising costs of running a business I will unfortunately have to make a small increase to the costs of Farriery services provided.

Please note this is the first increase in prices for three years and only the second increase in the entire time I have been in business, I very much hope everyone understands the need for this price change as I have always done everything possible to remain fair and competitive with pricing and will continue to do so.

The new prices will come into effect from February 1st 2025, this will hopefully help to avoid the expense of the Christmas period and begin after the first payday of the new year.

A new price list is available on demand and will be displayed in the van at all times. If there are any questions please feel free to contact me at any time.

Remedial barefoot trim on Candy from this week.

Candy presented with what initially appeared as a low level grass crack. But upon further investigation it appeared to have developed into seedy toe.

Seedy toe is an infection caused by an anaerobic bacteria which would thrive and worsen if left untreated in the deoxygenated void in the hoof created by the crack.

We treated the infection by removing the affected area of horn, cleainng with sole cleanse anti - bac spray and temporarily packing with Artimud hoof clay.

With time and air flow the affected area should grow back to a healthy hoof.

Horse presented with negative hoof pastern axis resulting in low crushed heels.

Upon discussion with the customer and the vet we have opted to apply a side clipped, rolled toe shoe to ease break over, fitted with increased caudal support to improve heel quality.

Also choosing to fit 3d wedge pads to help gradually correct NPA, applying dental impression material beneath pad to aid in support and absorption of concussion.
