✨ IS YOUR DOG FULFILLED? ✨

Often when dog guardians come to me asking for help, the first thing I think about is what was their dogs breed originally bred for and do they have an outlet for those behaviours 🤔

Dogs have an inherent desire to perform certain tasks depending on their breed and if they aren’t able to perform those, they often appear in other unwanted areas 😣

I see this a lot with gun dog breeds such as working line Spaniels and Labradors, but also herding breeds like Collies 🐾

When welcoming a dog into your life, you need to think about whether you can provide that dog with not just their general needs but their breed specific needs 🤎

This doesn’t mean that you have to take your Spaniel out on shoots, but can you provide them with that hunt, flush and retrieve that they were bred for through fun games? 🤔

If you can then that’s great, you will have a fulfilled dog that is willing to engage and have that all important off switch. But we need to put the work in! 👊🏼

Woody is a 2 year old Springer x Staffy mix and personality wise is definitely more Spaniel! We’ve been working through fun games to help with his patience and steadiness when doing retrievals and also using a flirt pole to provide an outlet for his chase instinct! 🐿️

Woody is doing great and I can’t wait to see how meeting his needs helps him to progress further 🥰

✨BEHAVIOURAL CHANGES AFTER NEUTERING ✨

Often when talking about neutering, it’s mostly the benefits that are spoken about…reduced hu***ng, less marking, reduced hyperactivity etc…

But did you know it can come with some less desirable changes? 🤨

In some cases, if a dog is already nervous, neutering can actually make matters worse. The testosterone they did have gave them a bit of bravery and without it they feel more on edge and defensive 😣

For almost 3 year old Dachshund Bert, this has caused him to have mixed feelings about social situations with other dogs…so what are we doing to help him?

✨Going back to basics. Bert already completed 10 sessions with me as a young pup, so we’re going back to playing the engagement games that he’s used to around dogs at a distance

✨Building trust. Removing him from/avoiding situations that Bert doesn’t feel 100% comfortable in. This lets him know his guardians will make the right choices for him

✨Confidence building games. Playing fun games like ‘Cardboard Castle’ to help him become more optimistic in situations with unknown outcomes

✨Exposing him to the right dogs. Dogs that can read social cues/body language will give Bert the space he needs without him having to escalate his behaviour. This provides him with healthy and positive interactions

With the commitment from Bert’s guardians he’ll be feeling much more confident in himself soon enough 🥰

✨WHY CHOOSE 1-2-1 PUPPY TRAINING?✨

1-2-1 puppy training is my favourite way to train for many reasons! 🐶

✅ You don’t have to wait for them to be fully vaccinated to join group classes

✅ You can make the most out of those first few weeks where your pup is like a sponge

✅ A 100% tailored experience, focusing on what is important to you and your pup

✅ You get my absolute undivided attention for the duration of the sessions

If you’re bringing a new puppy home and you’d like to give them the best start in life, then please get in touch to find out more! 🐶

Pre-puppy consultations are also available for those who want to prepare before the arrival of their new addition 🥰

✨ DIESEL ✨

This gorgeous boy is an 18 month old Labrador x Mudi mix. His guardians got in contact as they needed help with his reactivity. Diesel is an excitable, adolescent dog with herding instincts and this shows up as barking and lunging at other dogs on walks 💥

People often think that training reactivity needs to be done when the dog is reacting, when in reality there is so much outside of being in the presence of a trigger that actually helps address reactivity 👍🏼

I suggested his guardians did breed specific activities/games to give an outlet for his herding instincts, as well as working on building up focus with themselves 👏🏼

These methods will have a significant impact in helping with the behavioural modification we are doing to change his emotional response to his triggers 🥳

After two sessions he’s showing great progress. I look forward to continuing our journey! 🥰

✨ ZELDA ✨

Gorgeous Zelda had her first training session with me today! We worked on engagement around distractions and a little bit of recall ☺️

Zelda is almost 4 months old and has a lot to learn. She’s an eager girl and I’m looking forward to watching her develop! 🥰

✨ TIME AND PATIENCE ✨

It is very rare in dog training to see a change in behaviour overnight. It’s important to give training/behavioural plans time to take effect and also have patience with your dog 🐶

This is even more applicable with reactivity 💥

I have been working with Tink on her reactivity through weekly 1-2-1 training walks for the past 6 months. Previously, a dog at any distance would cause her to bark and lunge and now she happily watches from a distance and chooses to engage with me instead! 🤩

This doesn’t mean that Tink never reacts…close proximity and certain breeds can cause a reaction, but these are becoming less frequent/intense and she recovers much more quickly 👏🏼

We’ve worked at Tink’s pace and it’s paying off. I’m sure this sweet girl will continue to improve as we carrying on working together 🥰
