We would all like to wish one local Methlick farmer a very happy 50th birthday today.. he will have spent it working on his windy hill top at Gowanwell, like he spends most of his days, but hopefully he will get time for a dram tonight! Cheers Ross Hewitt, happy birthday from us 🍻🥃

Bluetongue restrictions now in place!

We have now entered the ‘high risk’ period for Bluetongue transmission and as Scotland remains free of the disease movement restrictions now apply and will remain in place until at least 9th September.
Almost all cattle and sheep movements into Scotland from any other part of the UK will now require either a pre-movement negative test or, for cattle only, to be fully vaccinated at least 21 days previously with the Bovalto-3 vaccine.
Remember these controls only reduce risk and do not eliminate the risk completely. As ever we would ask all our farmers to consider whether importing animals during the coming months is absolutely essential, or could the movement be delayed until cooler weather arrives.
For more information see https://www.gov.scot/publications/bluetongue/pages/bluetongue-movement-restrictions-for-animals/

All things fertility at Shannas!

We enjoyed a fantastic day among top quality livestock yesterday discussing all things fertility, bull management, heifer selection, grass and much much more!

Huge thanks to our hosts John and Margaret Penny, Keith Johnstone (Hillcrest), Iain McCormack (Zoetis), catering from Ythan Bakery and all our suckler clients that made it along to share their knowledge, experience and expertise.

Nematodirus warning! 🐑☠️

The Nematodirus hatch is imminent across Aberdeenshire.

Lambs 6-12 weeks old on grass that had young lambs on it last year are at greatest risk. Keep an eye on stock and the forecast tool at https://www.scops.org.uk/forecasts/nematodirus-forecast/.

White drench is the most effective treatment, but needs to be timed correctly. Contact us to discuss.

As the sun was setting last night our vet Fiona delivered this big lad by caesarian section. Caesarian’s in cows (and sheep) are performed under local anaesthetic and recovery is very quick! 😊
