π‘οΈπ Keeping Fish Cool During the Heatwave ππ‘οΈ
With temperatures soaring, pond and aquarium fish can quickly become stressed by overheating and low oxygen levels. Here are a few simple ways to help keep your fish healthy during the heatwave:
β
Increase aeration β Add extra air stones, fountains, or waterfalls to boost oxygen levels. Warm water holds less oxygen, so this is especially important.
β
Provide shade β Use pond covers, floating plants, umbrellas, or move aquariums away from direct sunlight to reduce water temperature.
β
Top up evaporated water carefully β Replace lost water gradually and ensure it's dechlorinated if using tap water.
β
Feed less β Fish require less food in extreme heat, and uneaten food can reduce water quality and oxygen levels.
β
Monitor water temperature β Aquariums may benefit from cooling fans, opening the lid slightly, or frozen water bottles floated temporarily (without direct contact with fish).
β
Maintain good water quality β Check filters are working properly and remove any debris that could decompose and consume oxygen.
β οΈ Watch for signs of heat stress such as fish gasping at the surface, lethargy, or unusual behaviour. If you notice these signs, increase aeration immediately.
A little extra care during hot weather can make a big difference to the wellbeing of our aquatic friends. Stay cool and keep those fish happy! π π
