🌧️ A reminder about our poor weather policy!

We’re certainly not fair-weather dog walkers! But when it comes to training, there are a few more things to consider.

As we head towards the colder, wetter months, there may be occasions when we need to postpone lessons.

We carefully assess the weather conditions, including temperature, wind and rain, while considering each dog’s breed, age, size and health.

After all, there’s a big difference between having a brilliant time splashing through puddles and trying to concentrate on learning something new! And if your dog particularly struggles with cold, wind or rain, please let me know.

The good news? You’ll never lose out.

🐾 Any postponed lessons are simply rolled over at no extra cost.

🐾 You’ll have training guides and video tutorials to keep you busy.

🐾 And I’m always happy to answer questions or offer support between sessions.

We also aim to make these decisions with plenty of notice, usually around two hours beforehand, so nobody has an unnecessary journey.

Sometimes the weather improves after we’ve made that call. That’s Scottish weather for you!

Ultimately, I’d much rather you and your dog enjoy your lesson, feel you’ve achieved something and leave looking forward to the next one.

We’re not here to battle the elements. We’re here to help dogs and their people learn, grow and have fun together! 🧡

Work with your teenager — don’t fight against them.

The foundations are there. Now’s the time to use them.

Practice the things they know, keep it interesting, have plenty of fun and don’t panic when it isn’t perfect. Consistency now builds skills that last a lifetime.

You’ve got this — and so have they.

🎉 HUGE NEWS — IT’S OFFICIAL! 🎉

I’m incredibly proud to share that I have achieved ABTC Animal Training Instructor status!

This is a huge milestone for me and JP Dog Training, and something I’m immensely proud to have worked towards.

In a nutshell, it means my knowledge, practical skills, welfare standards and approach to training have been independently and rigorously assessed against the highest professional standards.

A massive thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey — especially the clients and dogs involved in case studies, assessments and videos — and to the wider JP Dog Training community for all the support along the way.

This is because of all of you and for all of you! 🙏

Not much changes day to day…

Same training. Same fun.

Just one very proud business owner tonight.

Dava has just reached Level 10 in Hoopers, so we’re starting to prepare him for the intermediate levels — including working at 9m between obstacles.

At just 2 years old, he’s already such a capable little dog. He and his brothers also do scent work and flyball, with a very dedicated owner who gives them plenty of opportunities to learn, work and enjoy themselves.

Sometimes it’s simply about giving dogs more outlets for their energy, brains and natural abilities.

Dogs are meant to have hobbies, jobs and activities too.

Walks are great but they don’t have to do all the heavy lifting. We have some great options here in Moray - get into something new!

Freddie absolutely smashed his biggest lead-walking challenge yet this week.

He’s been progressing so well that it was time to up the ante a little — and that meant Ammy had her first proper day at work.

She did brilliantly, and Freddie was incredible.

One of the most useful parts of the session was seeing what Freddie actually wanted around another dog.

From a distance, he can be all mouth and excitement. But once he was working closer to Ammy, he showed us something quite different — he wasn’t desperate for a big play session at all.

He was much happier simply co-existing.

That kind of information is incredibly useful.

The better we understand what our dogs genuinely need and want around other dogs, the better choices we can make for them when we’re out and about.

Ammy is 1. 🥳

When they’re tiny, everything feels like a milestone.

12 weeks.
6 months.
Teenage phase.
Recall. Lead walking. Settling. Social skills.

Then suddenly, you look up and they’re not really a puppy anymore.

And the question changes.

It’s less “what should she be able to do by now?”
and more…

“What kind of adult dog are we building?”

With Ammy, the long game now is about good choices, calmness, confidence, communication and being able to move through life without everything becoming a big event.

She’s happy. She’s clever. She’s wonderfully chilled out.

And I think that’s the bit we sometimes miss when we’re busy chasing puppy milestones.

Training doesn’t stop when the basics are done.

It just becomes less about ticking boxes…
and more about shaping the dog you’ll be living with for years to come.

“She’s just ignoring me.”

Lola has always been a funny little character — honestly, she’s probably more cat than dog.

So when her recall became patchy and she seemed to develop a bit of “selective hearing”, it would have been very easy to shrug and say typical spaniel… typical dog.

Except it didn’t quite fit.

We looked a little closer, got our vets involved, and discovered that Lola is losing her hearing.

So we’ve gone right back to foundations: more check-ins, hand signals, visual communication and making sure she can still understand what we’re asking of her.

Sometimes a change in behaviour isn’t a training problem.

Sometimes our dogs are telling us that something has changed.

Worth listening to — even when they can’t.

Big dog. Soft dog.

At 55kg, Buffy is a lot of dog physically, but she’s also rather sensitive.

And that’s a useful reminder that good training isn’t really about strength, control, or who can hold onto the lead the hardest.

Most of the time, it’s about communication.

It’s noticing what your dog is telling you, thinking ahead, and making choices about the environment that give them the best chance of getting it right.

Sometimes good handling looks less like “I made my dog do this” and more like “I helped my dog make a good decision.”
