I love seeing dogs and handlers reach the point where they can stop thinking about every little detail and simply enjoy working together.

Little Xena had a home visit today. šŸ¾

At just 14 weeks old, every other day seems to bring a new milestone, a new challenge, or a new adventure.

Those early weeks pass incredibly quickly, which is why getting off to a good start can make such a difference.

Home visits help establish healthy play, training and sleep routines, start the socialisation process cleanly and smoothly, and prevent little puppy habits from becoming big dog habits later on.

Each visit includes a puppy training booklet, access to our extensive puppy video library, and as much ongoing online support as you need between sessions.

Another lovely evening exploring the park yesterday with a fantastic group of dogs and handlers.

These walks arenā€™t about marching in a perfect heel. Theyā€™re about learning to relax around other dogs, practising real-world skills, building confidence and enjoying the journey together.

Plenty of space, plenty of sniffing, and lots of opportunities to make good choices.

Playing is Training! šŸ¾

In this exercise, Amyrlin and Tilly are practising the Round game ā€” learning to run around trees, posts and other obstacles on cue.

Food helps teach the behaviour, but later play šŸ„Ž is what creates the excitement!

Games like this build confidence, body awareness and the ability to work independently at a distance. Thatā€™s one of the reasons I enjoy activities like Hoopers, Gundog and Fun Agility so much ā€” they teach useful skills whilst keeping training fun for both dog and handler.

Off Lead Adventures šŸ¾

Today Amyrlin and Tilly had plenty of opportunities to make their own decisions.

New scents. Wildlife trails. The freedom to range ahead, fall behind, or nose around in the verge.

And yet, time and time again, they chose to stay connected.

Thatā€™s what off-lead reliability actually looks like.

Not a dog glued to your leg. Not endless recalls. Not a running commentary of commands.

Just two dogs who know how to enjoy their freedom whilst staying part of the team.

That doesnā€™t happen by accident. Itā€™s built through the relationship ā€” through consistency, communication, and hundreds of small moments that add up over time.

As you can probably tell from the mucky legs, there was still plenty of time to investigate a few stinky bogs along the way!

Days like this are the reward. šŸŒ²šŸ¾

Today itā€™s a ball. Tomorrow it might be a rabbit.

The goal isnā€™t to create a dog that never gets excited.

Itā€™s to create a dog that can still think when they are.

In this game, Amyrlin watches the ball being thrown, waits for permission to go, and can even stop mid-chase before being released again.

Weā€™re not suppressing excitement or taking the fun out of the game. Weā€™re teaching her how to harness it.

Because whether itā€™s a tennis ball, another dog, or a rabbit disappearing into the bushes, the ability to pause, think, and respond is a skill worth practising.

From ā€œbulldozer modeā€ to this šŸ‘Œ

Sebastian the Bouvier used to find the outside world pretty overwhelming. Cars, dogs and people could quickly send him into big excited emotions.

Today though he cruised around the park on a relaxed lead, stayed connected to his owner and handled all the goings on brilliantly.

No magic trick. No shortcuts.

Just reps, consistency, progressive exposure and teaching calmness as a skill.

End of another fun week of training.

Just three of my new friends from this afternoonā€¦ and honestly, donā€™t you just love the incredible variety in the dog world?

From compact wrinkly meatballsā€¦ to aerodynamic noodle missilesā€¦ to classic all-round athletes ā€” theyā€™re all still dogs, all still learning, and all brilliant in their own ways.

Fergus is a four year old springer spaniel and has enough enthusiasm and drive to power a small village!

Like a lot of high-drive dogs, all that energy and adrenaline can sometimes get in the way of communication ā€” so rather than fighting it, weā€™ve given it somewhere to go.

This session we worked on retrieves, distance sends onto a gun box, and some tidier handovers. Skills that ask him to think before he acts. And for a Spaniel like Fergus, that kind of work is the reward.

Weā€™re building focus, steadiness and off-lead reliability ā€” and Fergus doesnā€™t feel like heā€™s doing obedience for a second.

Sometimes the secret to great training is just making the job feel like play.
