The rules for travelling with pets have changed.

Residents of Great Britain travelling to the EU with a dog, cat or ferret after 22 April 2026 will need to get an Animal Health Certificate for their pet.

If you live in England, Scotland or Wales, pet passports will no longer be a valid document for travelling with pets from Great Britain to the EU.

Full details of the changes can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/taking-your-pet-abroad

If you have any queries about how these changes may affect you, or would like to get an Animal Health Certificate for your pet, please contact us on 0131 650 7650 or by email on [email protected].

World Animal Vaccination Day is a reminder of the value of vaccines to protect animals from preventable diseases, ensure their wellbeing and protect human health. They also reduce the need for antibiotics.

Meet Reggie, a two-year-old the cocker spaniel, who visited us at the weekend for his booster vaccinations with vet Claire.

Every animal is different, and so is their care. Our vet team can discuss which vaccinations, are most appropriate for your pet based on their environment, lifestyle and other health factors.

As we welcome the arrival of spring, be aware of the potential hazards that the changing season can bring for pets.

To help keep our furry friends happy and healthy at this time of year, our vets have highlighted some potential dangers to be aware of.

From seasonal flowers to hot cross buns and chocolate; read our guide on what to watch out for in the coming weeks and months: https://edin.ac/4bGO2F4

Meet Fergus, a 12-year-old Maine C**n cat who isn’t letting his chronic kidney disease (CKD) slow him down.

When Fergus wasn’t feeling his best, a blood test revealed he had early stages of CKD – a very common condition in older cats.

While CKD can’t be cured, if it’s picked up early, we can slow its progression and greatly improve quality of life. Just like in Fergus’ case, early diagnosis allows our vets to carefully monitor CKD patients and step in with the right treatments at the right time – such as diet changes and/or medication.

Fergus also had a high blood pressure reading at one of his check-ups. We know that some cats get nervous when they visit the vets, which can raise their blood pressure. Instead of starting blood pressure medication, we arranged for Fergus to come back a couple of times and spend time with our nurses, who took repeat readings in a calm environment. In this setting, Fergus’s blood pressure was completely normal, so no medication was needed.

If you have an older cat, regular health checks and blood tests can make a huge difference. Get in touch to book a health check for your senior cat or to chat about CKD management.

Meet Iniri, who came into our practice recently for a health check and his first vaccination.

He was a confident, outgoing kitten who was keen to explore the consult room and perch on vet Angus's shoulder.

Iniri passed his health check with flying colours and was brave when he received his vaccination.

We allocate a double appointment for visits such as Iniri’s, so there is plenty of time to give kittens a full examination. Our vets can also advise on tailored preventative care, such as parasite control, and answer any questions the owner may have.

It is also a great opportunity to discuss with owners how they can adapt their home to allow natural behaviours such as climbing, scratching, hiding and hunting by providing scratching posts, boxes and puzzle feeders which, along with interactive play sessions, help keep pets physically and mentally stimulated.

If you are considering giving a kitten or cat a home, we are very happy to offer advice about where you can find one, and how to help them settle into their new home.

You can find more cat and kitten advice at https://icatcare.org
