🦜 YOUR PARROT ISN’T A DECORATION AND A FULL FOOD BOWL ALONE ISN’T ENRICHMENT!
In the wild, parrots spend hours foraging: climbing, chewing, searching, opening pods and solving problems.
In captivity, if everything is simply placed in a bowl, that natural challenge disappears.
🥣 Eat.
🪵 Sit.
😴 Wait.
🔁 Repeat.
What do we expect them to do with all that spare time?
Boredom can contribute to behaviours such as feather plucking, pacing, screaming and destructive behaviour.
The answer isn’t simply “buy another toy.”
👉 Make them WORK for their food.
🌿 THE GOAL ISN’T TO TAKE THE FOOD BOWL AWAY. IT’S TO MAKE FOOD MORE INTERESTING!
Keep providing your parrot with its complete, appropriate diet. But some foods can also be presented as foraging opportunities.
🍽️ WHAT DOES “PART OF THE DAILY RATION” MEAN?
Think of foraging as another way of offering food, not another meal.
For example:
➡️ You prepare the amount of food your parrot is meant to receive during the day.
➡️ Some can go into the usual feeding area.
➡️ Some can be hidden or scattered in safe foraging activities.
➡️ You are not adding extra treats simply because the bird is foraging.
This helps prevent enrichment from accidentally turning into overfeeding, particularly when high-calorie treats are involved.
⚠️ BUT NEVER REDUCE A BIRD’S ESSENTIAL FOOD JUST TO MAKE IT FORAGE.
The aim is not to make your parrot hungry enough to search.
❌ Don’t remove essential food to force foraging.
❌ Don’t deliberately restrict food intake.
❌ Don’t suddenly change the diet.
❌ Don’t assume a hungry bird will eat unfamiliar food.
If you’re unsure how much your individual parrot should be eating, or you’re trying to change its diet, speak to an avian/exotic veterinarian.
🌿 SAFE FORAGING IDEAS:
📦 Plain, unbleached paper parcels
🧁 Plain paper cups or cardboard trays
🥬 Bird-safe leafy-green parcels
🧺 Untreated, bird-safe natural baskets
🌳 Safe, pesticide-free natural branches
🍎 Suitable fruit and vegetables placed at different heights
⚠️ Use only bird-safe, untreated materials and supervise new enrichment. Avoid lead, zinc, questionable metals, treated wood, toxic plants, loose fibres and anything that can splinter or be swallowed.
🧠 KEEP IT INTERESTING!
If your parrot solves the same puzzle in five minutes, change it. Rotate the location, material and difficulty.
🫵 TRY THIS TODAY
Take some of the food your parrot is already going to eat that day and turn it into a simple foraging challenge.
Don’t make the bird go hungry.
Make mealtimes more exciting. 🌿🧠🦜
Because the goal isn’t a hungry parrot.
The goal is a healthy, curious, mentally stimulated parrot. 💚
