Is your dog “deaf”… but knows the sound of cheese?

Often dogs who suddenly stop listening aren’t being stubborn at all and they’re simply already on their own mission.

Many dogs become so focused on the next thing that the human gets left behind. Here’s a few simple little habits that can help hugely:
🐾Call your dog to you when putting a lead on or off
🐾Go first through doorways and let them follow
🐾When they rush to pull you, just stop. Simply stop and take a minute to slow the whole thing down

Calm connection is built in tiny everyday moments and not just when things go wrong.

Safe. Calm. Quiet.

❓How often do you look directly at your dog… and why?

Humans use eye contact to connect. We look at babies, partners and friends to show attention, reassurance and love. But for dogs, direct eye contact can mean something very different. Yet we expect them to understand us anyway. Doesn’t seem entirely fair, does it?

Soft eye contact from someone they trust can absolutely help a dog feel safe and connected. Invited to join us, even.

But staring, leaning over them or constantly trying to “hold” their attention can feel like pressure, especially for nervous, sensitive or socially unsure dogs.

That’s why dogs will often:
🐾 look away
🐾 yawn
🐾 lip lick
🐾 turn their head

They’re trying to soften the interaction to a place that they understand.

Interestingly, at Day Care, calm and socially balanced dogs rarely stare or look at each other unless they want to initiate a game. They glance, disengage and give one another space naturally.

Safe. Calm. Quiet.
