It's called the nictitating membrane that sweeps horizontally across the eye to keep it moist and protected. In healthy animals you rarely see it, but if it starts showing prominently it's often a sign something's off health-wise.

And yes, humans have one too. That tiny pink triangle in the inner corner of your eye? That's the remnant of it. We just lost the ability to move it somewhere along the evolutionary road.

Research from Queen’s University Belfast found that dogs exposed to human stress scent, taken just from sweat and breath samples, became more “pessimistic” when doing problem-solving tasks.
Basically, when they could smell stress, they were more likely to expect a negative outcome, even though nothing bad had actually happened.
So it’s not just about tone of voice or body language. Dogs can detect the chemical changes in our bodies and adjust their behaviour based on that.
