Meet Kimie! 🐶

1. What’s your role at the practice and how long have you been part of the team?

I'm our Senior Vet Nurse and I've been part of the team for 8.5 years!

2. What’s your favourite part of the job?

Honestly, my favourite part of my job is to see a really poorly patient starts to feel like themselves again and gives you that little tail wag or eats that tiny bit of food.

3. What’s your favourite animal to work with?

I am a dog person and love working with them

4. Do you have any pets? Tell us about them

I have the one and only Tumbo who’s a malshi. She can untie your shoe laces and she thinks she's the boss of the practice too.

5. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I prefer warm drink over cold even in summer.

Little Sunny came in for his vaccines the other day and not only was he a very brave boy he also showed off his newly learned tricks to us!

Socialisation isn’t just about meeting other dogs — it’s about gently introducing puppies to the world around them. Different people, sounds, surfaces, car journeys, handling, grooming and visits to the vets can all become positive experiences when introduced early and at their own pace. 💛

Keep experiences short, positive and reward-based, and never force a puppy into something they’re worried about. Building confidence now can make a huge difference later in life! 🐾

Dental disease is extremely common in rabbits, and sometimes a diseased tooth needs to be removed rather than simply burred or trimmed. However, extracting a rabbit tooth is very different from extracting a dog or cat tooth — and it can be a particularly challenging procedure.

Rabbit teeth have very long crowns extending deep below the gumline, with delicate surrounding bone and closely associated structures. Their continuously growing teeth also mean that removing the entire tooth, including the tissues responsible for producing new tooth, is important to reduce the risk of regrowth.

Successful extraction can therefore require:

🦷 Specialist rabbit dental instruments and equipment
📸 Dental X-rays to assess the tooth and surrounding structures
💉 Carefully planned rabbit anaesthesia and pain relief
🔍 Experience with rabbit dental anatomy and extraction techniques
🌿 Appropriate post-operative care and nutritional support

Some extractions can be particularly technically demanding, especially when teeth are abnormal, fractured, infected or firmly embedded within the jaw. This is one of the reasons why rabbit dental extraction isn’t a procedure offered by every veterinary practice.

At Abercorn Vets, we have invested in the equipment, training and experience needed to manage more complex rabbit dental cases, including dental imaging and extractions.

1. What’s your role in practice and how long have you been part of the team?

senior reception, 5 years and counting

2. What’s your favourite part of the job?

I enjoy the animal care side of the job, being in an admin role we dont get that very often, furry cuddles make the day a little brighter.

3. What’s your favourite animal to work with?

Love love love cats 🐈

4. Do you have any pets? Tell us about them.

We sadly lost our cat lily earlier this year but we still have Nyka our husky, shes an old girl now so time is precious.

5. What’s something people be surprised to learn about you?

I can deadlift 110kg which is the equivalent of 1.7 my own body weight or the equivalent weight of a Giant Panda 🐼

Meet the team 🩷

First up is Caitlin

1. What is your role in practice, and how long have you been with us?

I am a vet and have been part of the team for 5 years now

2. What’s your favourite part of your job?

Surgery! I am currently in the middle of studying for a certificate in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery and enjoy working closely with my colleagues and especially Rachel on anaesthesia, to deliver good surgical outcomes for a wide range of patients including hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs and cats.

3. What’s your favourite animal to work with?

I enjoy working with all of the animals we see for different reasons but if I had to pick a favourite it would be cats

4. Do you have any pets? Tell us about them

I have a 5 year old cat called Morag who I adopted from the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home after she came in to be spayed as a kitten. She is a black and white tuxedo who loves food, has a tiny head and is more than a few sandwiches short of a picnic!

5. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

When I'm not at work, I spend a lot of my weekends travelling around Scotland playing shinty, Scotland's traditional national sport. It explains why I can often be seen sporting some impressive bruises in the spring and summer months!

Poppy was in to see us recently after getting a pesky grass seed stuck in her ear.

Poppy’s mum had let us know she had won a very important competition at the weekend ‘best waggy tail’. We can see why! This is Poppy under sedation to get her grass seed removed and her tail did not stop wagging!

Everyone meet Poppy.

Poppy is a 4.5 year old guinea pig that was losing hair, becoming aggressive with her pal Roxy and her very observant owners had noticed a bulge in her tummy.

All of these symptoms are classic signs of cystic ovarian disease. Female guinea pigs are very prone to this condition and whilst some are found incidentally, some can cause a whole host of problems.

Unfortunately for Poppy her cysts were huge and taking up a large portion of her tummy. These cysts can also form adhesions between other organs which can impair their function too. An ultrasound scan confirmed the presence of 2 very large cysts alongside uterine thickening and suspected mass.

Poppy underwent a general anaesthetic (carefully planned and tailored to Poppy by Rachel) whilst vet Caitlin got to work with surgery. Nurse Shauna assisted and made sure all Poppys vitals were normal throughout the operation.

Poppys cysts were so large they had to be drained prior to being removed and the operation was long and complex as both had caused adhesions to both of her kidneys.

We are delighted to report Poppy has made a good recovery and her devoted mum has sent us some picture updates.

We currently have 25% off small mammal neutering at the moment and we strongly advise that female rabbits, guinea pigs and rats are neutered to prevent health issues in the future
