We have had a stray dog handed into our Portobello branch. He is a male entire staffy. Looks to be an older gentleman. He is microchipped but contact details are not up to date. If anyone knows the owner or you think this is your dog please call us on 0131 669 3790 - our phone line shuts at 6pm.

Evie 🩷

Evie is an 8 year old budgie who came to us after her owners noticed she had stopped flying.

On clinical exam we could appreciate a build up of air under Evie’s skin. This is a condition known as subcutaneous emphysema, and is usually caused by a ruptured air sac in birds. Ruptured air sacs can have numerous causes but in Evie’s case trauma was deemed most likely. In this video you can see we used x-ray to confirm the build up of air and to assess her other organs and then we used a small needle to drain the air to keep her comfortable. She required a further drainage of air 1 week later and the creation of a stoma in her skin to prevent further inflation alongside pain relief. However we are happy to report she has now deflated and is back to her mischievous self and is under treatment for her feather loss 👏

Meet Kayleigh 🐶🐱

1. What’s your role in practice and how long have you been part of the team?

My role is reception Manager and I have been with this practice now for 8yrs.

2. What is your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is seeing the animals come out the other end of their illnesses, even if I am not part of the clinical team, these kinds of cases affect us all and can hugely impact us, seeing the wee ones recover makes me immensely proud to be a part of it.

3. What is your favourite animal to work with?

I really enjoy working with the Spicy Catties and any bully breed dog! Not everyone's favourite but for sure mine.

4. Do you have any pets? Tell us about them

I am owned by Buster beans, a staffie x rottweiler who is 12yrs old, and a Black DSH Binx(y) who is about 6yrs old who we adopted from EDCH, he's the epitome of spicy and keeps us up to date on latest protocols on handling of said spicy catties.

5. What is something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I used to be terrified of birds, now I am the resident bird lady. 🐦 🦅

Meet Ted, Ted was recently in for a little check-up with our team, where he was his usual happy self and made sure everyone knew that biscuits were very much expected.

Ted has been part of the Abercorn family for 14 years! since he was just a puppy. His mum tells us that the vet is actually one of Ted’s favourite places to visit — and we can see why!

Ted has even been known to pop in without an appointment just in case we happen to have biscuits available. And, of course, we are more than happy to feed him to his heart’s content! 🐾🩷

🐰 Happy International Rabbit Day! 🐰

If there’s one message we’d love every rabbit owner to take away today, it’s this: find yourself a rabbit-savvy veterinary team. 💚

Rabbits aren’t simply small cats and dogs. Their anatomy, physiology, behaviour and medical needs are very different, and they’re experts at hiding pain and illness. Recognising those subtle changes — and knowing what to do about them — can make a huge difference.

At Abercorn Vets, rabbit care is something we’re particularly passionate about. 🐇

We’re proud to have achieved Silver Plus Rabbit Friendly status, reflecting the work we’ve put into making our practice, protocols and nursing care more rabbit-friendly.

For us, rabbit-savvy care means understanding everything from the importance of gut health and appropriate nutrition, to recognising subtle signs of pain, investigating dental disease properly, providing rabbit-specific anaesthesia and analgesia, and knowing that recovery doesn’t end when the surgery does.

It also means understanding just how important a rabbit’s bonded companion can be — and doing everything we can to minimise stress during their visit. ❤️

Rabbit medicine has advanced enormously, and these wonderful animals deserve veterinary care that reflects just how complex they really are.

So, on International Rabbit Day, if you have rabbits, one of the best things you can do for them is find a veterinary team with a genuine interest and experience in rabbit medicine — before you need them in an emergency.

And of course, no International Rabbit Day post would be complete without a bunny doing one of the things we most love to see… eating! 🌿🐰 Biscuit was in for castration yesterday and as you can see tucked straight into his snacks post op! Sound up for the best noise in the world!

We’re proudly cat friendly!

This means we take extra steps to ensure our feline friends are kept comfortable and their needs are met whilst they stay with us.

Little Sheldon here (despite undergoing a surgical procedure) felt comfortable enough to play with his fishy for most of the day.

What a cutie!
