A while ago I was talking to someone about increasing their dog’s exercise.

“𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣 𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙪𝙥 𝙖𝙩 6𝙖𝙢 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙜 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠...”

Well…yes.

Dogs give us so much. Companionship. Affection. Connection. They improve our physical and emotional wellbeing. They ease our loneliness. They are loyal to a fault.

And because they give us so much, we owe them something in return.

We owe them an understanding of their species and their breed.
We owe them the chance to behave like dogs - even if that means muddy paws and wet coats.
We owe them time outdoors in interesting places, not just ten minutes round the block.
We owe it to them to teach them the rules of human society. Or, if we don’t, we owe it to them not to be frustrated when they get it wrong.
We owe them kindness.
We owe them our time, even when it’s inconvenient.
And we owe it to them not to sideline them when our lives get busy.

Sharing your life with a dog is a privilege. But privileges come with responsibilities. If we want what dogs give, then we have to be prepared to give in our turn.
