Puppy Socialisation

The more I learn about the puppy life stage, the more passionate I am about helping owners get this right for their puppies, as can make a HUGE difference.

We already have had zero influence on the first 8-10 weeks of the puppies life so what happens next is really important.

Ive had some sessions this week with owners with really young puppies and have helped answer questions, support and reassure them, help with socialisation techniques, troubleshooting biting & toilet training and teaching some foundations to build calmness and engagement right from the start. Feedback has been really good. Some will join puppy classes ahead of the game.

I have detailed PDFs, to support everything I teach, which I update continually as I learn more.

If you have a new puppy or know anyone that does, please share. I love doing these sessions!

Not dogs but this deserves pause and celebration for what he has done for the natural environment. My daughter said we should have a national holiday!

He has had an impact over many generations and if we all did what we could and everyone showed kindness to all living creatures the world would be a better place.

As the man himself said -

“It’s surely our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth.” — Sir David Attenborough, turning 100 today. Happy birthday to a true legend. 🌿”

🐑 🐑 Sheep! - Some real life training!

Recall then disengagement

Sheep, especially sheep moving or bleating are important to Tiggy, she notices them and I think would definitely chase if given a chance

As you can see, she has already zoomed towards the gate but recalled back nicely so pleased with that. It is an opportunity to practice some disengagement and I will do this by using disengagement pattern. Dogs love predictable patterns so I am using to teach build disengagement skills.

I am firstly doing the pattern at the gate towards the sheep before going into the field.

She knows the pattern so I am throwing towards the stimulus I want her to disengage from. She is aware the sheep are there but chooses to turn back to me where I am giving her more value- learning.

This pattern is practiced many times in neutral settings first.

I would progress this by doing when the sheep are naturally closer or safely behind a fence but I don’t want to disturb them by closing in.

I use this pattern with horses, cows, chickens, ducks etc and I love it!

Why I love teaching a “Middle” behaviour!

Where do I start!

* It is a cued behaviour - this takes engagement back to you, brain back to thinking, disengagement from everything else and likely way more reinforcing for the dog than a sit as more rewarded and dynamic.

* Safety position - dog feels safe from threats
, incoming dogs.

* A good handling position if needed for veterinary exam, treatment and easy to get lead on etc

* End recall behaviour - the dog knows what to do so doesnt keep away if recalls back

* Mobile boundary - teach a middle on the move and you can move with your dog

* Practice luring

* Use as a premack cue before unclipping lead, do this and you get to run free

* Can teach it as coping strategy for worried dogs

* It is fun for you and the dog, one of my dog’s favourite things!

Comment if your dog knows this! 🐶

Do this when you just need to get out of dodge…

If your dog has intense emotional reactions to triggers, then you just need to take all the responsibility and create distance immediately. Yes you can pull them but if you teach and practice a cue that means you are about to turn them, then that is a really powerful tool and easier for your dog than being yanked.

As the video shows, sliding your hand down the lead becomes the cue. You are then quickly going to turn them and walk away.

This also allows you to have much more control and can avoid the flipping like a fish scenario on the end of the lead. Having a double clip set up can help further.

Firstly, I’m checking she is OK with me sliding my hand down then I am rewarding. I would repeat several times.

Next, when moving, I am being intentional about sliding my hand down and turning her and feeding as I’m walking away. In reality you might need to go further away and then access treats when at a distance, this is just practicing.

There are rescue things you can do after but in the situation you must just get them away and distance from the trigger. Even if the emotions are positive then they can become so aroused that they are not going to make good choices anyway.

Practicing this allows it to come naturally if you find yourself in this situation.
