Do you have an itchy dog?

Itchiness can be due to all sorts of reasons but there are things that can help.
It can really affect a dog’s emotional state, stress bucket and behaviour (and stressful for the owners too).

What treatments might help will depend on the cause.
If suspected dietary allergy, the best and most reliable option is hydrolysed diet for several weeks (proteins are broken down so they do not trigger the immune system) then foods are reintroduced one by one. Moving to food with novel proteins may help if a protein allergy but doesn’t solve other allergens eg grain, sweet potato etc

Environmental allergies (dust mite, pollen) are harder to identify but reducing exposure by extra cleaning, wiping down coat after walks etc can help along with vaccines to dampen the immune response.

However there are many other causes, often as a result of itching and damaging the skin barrier and secondary infections.

Do visit the vet and keep up to date with grooming or try theraclean baths if your your dog has itchy skin as can really help the skin barrier.

Meet Poppy!

She is having some 1-2-1 puppy sessions and she did super well!

Probably the fastest spin I have ever taught!

I love teaching puppies to spin as it is a great way of introducing luring, marking & rewarding, then adding a verbal cue.

It is also a cued behaviour, which is great for when they are excited and arousal is high, as you are speaking their language and meeting them where they are at.

Asking for a sit when they are jumping around is not going to cut it at this level, do dogs really enjoy having to sit?

Any cued behaviours that have been reinforced and rewarded, means brain back in their skull, engagement back with you and not with anything else.

Make training fun, teach behaviours that get the dogs moving, they turn feel empowered and you will see the benefits for engaging back with you!

Goodness me! My dog is a dope 😂

I was letting this play out to see what happened when she noticed it and she didn’t until a minute later when it appeared to the side then the explosion happened!

Foxes are stunning but they cause us all sorts of problems as they appear at all times of the day! Oh well excitement over for now……🦊vs 🐶

Loose lead walking 🐕‍🦺

Mixed age group class up at citidogs today. Made me smile as it was 2 spaniels and 2 cockapoos attending! Very busy breeds, genetically keen to be in front of their owners to flush out prey.

The dogs did really well, all the owners have lots of homework as loose lead walking takes time and patience to build, it is hard to train but well worth the effort.

No surprise to say classes are not ideal for learning foundational skills. Ideally you always start in low distraction environments and then take to busier locations as skills build. However, the owners and dogs all have had good practice, seen demos, supported, and they will get notes, videos and had loads of space to spread out. Nice feedback too! (And dodged the rain!) 😃

This is how I structure a loose lead class:

* Leaving the house- predictors & getting walking equipment on
* Arousal, where is their brain? - Start here
* Training v leisure set up, lead mechanics
* Value in proximity games, being & moving in the spotlight zone
* Reward placement.
* Side or with me cues
* Giving into lead pressure and rewind (both good disengagement games) and reverses the pull reflex
* Cone work
* 123 pattern games
* Pulling ahead strategies

I am not teaching obedience heel work, just loose lead AKA not pulling like a train, this is much more realistic, for spaniels in particular, but I still want dogs sniffing and enjoying their walks.

If interested in attending any of these mixed aged sessions, drop me a message. Doing all sorts from recall, loose lead, games, confidence, disengagement, engagement!
