🐢💚 RiverRescues is so much more than a rescue — we’re a family. 💚🐢

Behind every reptile we rescue, rehabilitate, and care for is an incredible team of volunteers who give their time, energy, skills, and hearts to making a difference.

From our cleaners keeping habitats safe and comfortable, to our feeders making sure every reptile gets the nutrition they need…
From our social media team sharing their stories and helping us reach more people, to our medication administrators ensuring vital treatments are given with care…
And our admin team, working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly.

Every role matters. Every person makes a difference. And together, you make the care and rescue of these incredible reptiles possible. 🐍🦎🐢

We couldn’t do what we do without you. Thank you for being the heart of RiverRescues. ❤️

One rescue. One family. One incredible team. 🫶

💚 A huge thank you to Forth 1 for helping us share our story. 🐍🦎

We are incredibly grateful to Forth 1 Radio for giving RiverRescues Animal Sanctuary a platform to tell people about the situation we are facing.

RiverRescues is Scotland’s main reptile and exotic pet rescue, and we are currently facing eviction after the building we call home, St Margaret’s House on London Road, was sold.

This has left us with just a few months to find new homes for over 100 animals and secure a new facility so we can continue the crucial work we do supporting and rescuing animals in need across Scotland.

This is an incredibly worrying and challenging time for us, but with your support, we can keep fighting for the animals who rely on us. ❤️

If you can help, please consider donating today. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, will help us secure a future for RiverRescues and the animals in our care.

Thank you to everyone who has shared our story, donated, offered support and stood beside us. We truly couldn’t do this without you. 💚

🚨 RIVERRESCUES NEEDS YOUR HELP 🚨

We’ve been given some incredibly difficult news. The building that currently houses RiverRescues has been sold, meaning we have to leave.

This isn’t a move we planned or wanted. We now urgently need to find a new location for the rescue and raise the funds needed to make that move possible.

Moving an animal rescue is a huge undertaking. We need somewhere suitable for the many reptiles and other animals in our care, while also covering the costs of securing a new property, moving equipment and animals, and getting the new facility ready.

💚 We’re asking for your help.

If you’re able to make a cash donation, no matter how small, please donate through our website:

Every donation will go directly towards helping us secure and move into a new home for RiverRescues.

If you can’t donate, please share this post. Getting this message in front of the right people could make a huge difference.

We’ve worked incredibly hard to build RiverRescues into what it is today, and we’re determined to make sure the animals in our care continue to have somewhere safe to call home.

Please help us find ours. 🐍🦎🐢❤️

🐢 TORTOISES NEED MORE THAN A SHELL AND SOME LETTUCE! 🌿

Tortoises can look like easy pets, but they’re a long-term commitment with very specific care requirements. Depending on the species, they need the right UVB lighting, basking temperatures, humidity, diet, substrate, space and seasonal care to stay healthy.

At RiverRescues, we currently have several different species in our care, including:

🐢 Hermann’s tortoises
🐢 Horsfield’s tortoises
🐢 Sulcata tortoises
🐢 Red-footed tortoises

And their requirements can be very different. A setup that works perfectly for a Hermann’s may be completely unsuitable for a Sulcata or Red-foot.

Some tortoises can live for many decades, grow much larger than people expect, and require increasingly large enclosures as they mature. They’re not a short-term pet, and sadly, that’s one reason so many end up needing rescue.

We’re here to give these animals the specialist care they need while helping educate future keepers about responsible tortoise ownership. 🐢❤️

Please research the exact species before taking one home. Their shell might be small, but the commitment certainly isn't.
