Jokes aside,
One of the biggest misconceptions in dog ownership is that getting a highly intelligent breed will somehow make life easier.

The reality is often the exact opposite.

Intelligent dogs don’t just learn quickly, they also get bored quickly. They require regular mental stimulation, training, problem-solving, and meaningful interaction with their owners. A smart dog isn’t satisfied with simply existing in the background of your life.

Too many people choose breeds known for their intelligence and assume that a large garden will provide all the enrichment they need. But a garden is just a space. Once the novelty wears off, it offers very little mental stimulation for a dog bred to think, work, and make decisions.

Breeds developed for herding, guarding, hunting, or other demanding jobs have generations of purpose behind them. If you don’t give these dogs a job, they’ll find one for themselves, and it’s usually not one you’ll appreciate. Digging craters in the lawn, dismantling furniture, excessive barking, escaping the garden, or herding the children are all common examples of a smart dog creating its own entertainment.

Before choosing a breed, don’t just ask how intelligent it is. Ask whether you can consistently meet the mental and physical needs that come with that intelligence.

A clever dog can be an incredible companion, but intelligence without an outlet often creates frustration for both dog and owner.

Your family protection dog should be stable enough to be able to around and interact with your family and friends.
