Suitable hiding places are essential for a happy healthy reptile. Large or small all reptiles and amphibians feel safer with appropriate hiding spots without they can easily end up stressed leading to health problems.

Strategically positioned all around the enclosure; lots of hides and hiding opportunities provide sheltered view points for your reptile, so they can look over their terrain feeling confident they're hidden from sight and 'safe from potential predation'.

Reptiles prefer to be and feel more secure squeezed tightly up against a surface - this is known as positive thigmotactic behaviour, reptiles do really need lots of appropriate, tight spaces to squeeze into and hide should they want.

It’s World Animal Day!

World Animal Day is a chance to celebrate animals around the world and think about the ways we can improve their welfare and protect the places they call home.

The theme for World Animal Day 2026 is “See the World Through Their Eyes” — encouraging us to think about the world from an animal’s perspective and consider how our choices affect the animals around us.

Animals all experience the world differently. They have different senses, behaviours, needs and ways of communicating, so understanding these differences is an important part of caring for them.

Activity idea: Choose an animal and imagine seeing the world through its eyes. What might it see, hear, smell or feel that we don't?

We had the most herp-tastic afternoon over at the Caffe Della Citta today for Amber's 8th birthday party 🥳🎉

Amber and her friends were ever so good; they listened carefully and followed instructions, respected all the animals including the feeder insects and by the end of the party they were all so confident you'd think they'd been handling snakes for much longer than a couple of hours ☺️

Here's some of the feedback I've already received this evening:

"Thank you so much, the kids absolutely loved it. Your animals express so much love it's amazing to see."

Feeling so proud of my scaly friends 🐍 They're true ambassadors of their species each helping to break down negative stereotypes and nurture the minds of our next generation with curiosity and wonder ✨️

Goodmorning my lovelies I do hope you've all had a great weekend, we've finally managed to get to speak to someone at the police station regarding the terrifying violent attack on Morag (Sanzinia) and me at my BoaCrazy - HerpMania stall on Ebbw Vale market in the summertime unfortunately the lady that hurt us has continued to harass/stalk me whilst I trade on the market and unless I have at least one of my helpers with me I cannot risk any damage or loss of stock and there is NO way I can jeopardise any of the animals safety including the dogs.

Thank you so much to everyone that has been helping throughout and a massive thank you to all my customers old and new. Thank you for the bookings for animal handling experiences and children's parties that have come through 🐍🦎🐢

It's been a different angle showcasing some of my own animals at public events, private parties and here at the HerpMania House but still crucially working towards my main goal of educating people to better care for their own animals.

As many of you are aware I started my brand HerpMania because I wanted to provide larger hides, hiding opportunities for medium to larger reptiles as there's still even now nothing other than my hides ready made available for medium to larger species on the market today. Unfortunately this lack of availability seems to give room for excuses like 'large snakes don't need to hide' 'my monitor can hide it's head under the cork bark it doesn't need a hide' 'my reptile doesn't need a hide to feel safe', I've heard some very strange reasons people think larger reptiles should suddenly be treated differently.

All reptiles benefit tremendously when provided with ample (several) hiding opportunities throughout their enclosure, a hiding area should be large enough for the entire animal not just it's head. Reptiles like to press their bodies up to a surface, squeeze in-between tight spaces and feel contact with more than one surface as opposed to feeling out in the open ie exposed to potential predation or threat; this is known as positive thigmotaxis.
