THE MCKINNEY K9 PHILOSOPHY
The Psychological Blueprint ā The Primary Human Bond
A dog is not merely an animal trained to respond to commands.
It is a sentient being, possessing emotions, memory, social awareness and the capacity to form profound attachments.
Through shared experience, companionship, communication and mutual trust, a dog may establish a particularly strong relationship with one human individual.
Over time, that personās voice, scent, movements, mannerisms, emotional characteristics and daily routines become deeply familiar to the dog.
It is as though the human partner has become blueprinted into the dogās psyche.
This psychological blueprint forms part of the dogās social world, providing familiarity, reassurance, confidence and a sense of belonging.
In the McKinney System, we regard this primary relationship as something to be cultivated, respected and protected.
Working Security Dogs
We recognise that a working dog may sometimes need to be handled by another individual.
However, the ability to accept temporary handling should not be confused with the repeated disruption of an established emotional partnership.
The person who can competently handle an animal is not necessarily the person to whom that animal is most deeply attached.
Someone may be competent to walk, kennel, transport or care for a particular security dog without necessarily possessing the experience, competence or authority to deploy that dog operationally.
Competence in temporary custody is not automatically competence in operational deployment.
We must also distinguish between emotional attachment and excessive dependence.
Our objective is a strongly bonded dog, not a helplessly dependent dog.
A confident, emotionally secure working dog should be capable of accepting responsible temporary handling without losing the stability provided by its primary relationship.
A dog is not a piece of equipment to be transferred indiscriminately from one operator to another.
It is a living, thinking and feeling partner whose emotional attachments can profoundly influence its confidence, behaviour and working performance.
The Primary Bond Principle
We seek to establish one enduring primary humanācanine partnership, supported by sufficient social confidence and adaptability to permit competent secondary handling when circumstances require it.
The primary bond provides emotional security, continuity and a foundation of mutual understanding.
Secondary handling should respect and preserve that relationship rather than attempt to replace it.
The objective is not dependence, but emotional security.
Not obedience born of uncertainty, but cooperation founded upon trust.
A handler may hold the lead, but the bond is held in the dogās mind.
