I hear this all the time from owners of reactive dogs.

Distracting.

And sometimes it works.

Until it doesn't.

The problem isn't necessarily that the technique was wrong.

Sometimes the problem is when, why and how it was being used.

Your reactive dog's walk doesn't start when they see another dog.

It starts much earlier.

It might start when you pick up the lead.

When you get the harness.

When you say "walk".

When you open the front door.

When they pull you down the drive.

By the time they see another dog, they may already be highly aroused.

And that matters.

Because we're often trying to change what happens at the trigger without considering the state our dog is already in when they get there.

Why might predictability matter to a reactive dog?

Imagine you’re walking along and you suddenly see something you find stressful.
You don’t know what is going to happen.
You don’t know what the other person or dog is going to do.
Your body becomes tense.
Your attention locks onto it.

Now imagine that you have a familiar pattern you’ve practised hundreds of times.
Something predictable.
Something that tells you what happens next.
That’s one reason I love using predictable patterns with dogs.

I’ll be introducing some practical examples in my webinar, including a simple 1,2,3 game you can begin practising at home.

But we’ll also look at when these games are useful and when they’re not.
Because a training game isn’t a magic button.
