Burnout in children is real — and it often doesn’t look the way adults expect.

When we hear the word “burnout,” we usually think about exhausted adults trying to juggle work, responsibilities, and stress. But children can experience burnout too, especially when they are constantly overwhelmed, masking their struggles, under pressure, emotionally exhausted, or unsupported in environments that don’t meet their needs.

Burnout in children can present as:• Increased anxiety or emotional outbursts• Withdrawal, shutdowns, or appearing “flat”• School refusal or avoidance• Exhaustion after school or social situations• Loss of confidence or motivation• Difficulty concentrating or remembering things• Increased sensory sensitivities• Aggression, irritability, or being labelled “challenging”• Physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, or sleep difficulties

Sometimes what looks like “bad behaviour,” “laziness,” or “lack of effort” is actually a child whose nervous system is overwhelmed.

Education settings and carers need to understand that burnout is not solved by more pressure, stricter consequences, or telling a child to “try harder.” Children need:• Psychological and emotional safety• Understanding rather than punishment• Predictability and reduced overwhelm• Rest and recovery time• Adjustments and accommodations• Trusted adults who listen and validate their experience• Environments that support regulation, not constant survival mode

Children do well when they can. If a child is struggling, the question should not be “What’s wrong with them?” but “What has happened to them?” and “What support do they need?”

Compassion, flexibility, and understanding can make a life-changing difference
