At this time of year, and the weather we've had lately, be sure to collect your samples as fresh as possible and refrigerate if you can, prior to collection.
It doesn't take too many hours in the heat for redworm eggs to hatch. That could mean that a sample with a high count when fresh, ends up as a low count because the majority have hatched. Although we have had samples with lots of larvae in the slide, they don't always show up.

Thinking about Summer worming ?
Or already converted to worm egg counts....

**********Test before you worm *********

Before you worm, get a faecal egg count done. If your horse has a low egg count it may not need worming at the moment.
It's better to know your horse's status. Is your current wormer working?

Of course you need to worm for encysted redworm in the Winter/Spring and you need to worm or test for tapeworm about 6 monthly.
Wormteq can supply Equisal tapeworm saliva tests if requested.

Even if you have a lot of horses it is still very easy to do worm egg counts. You could save a lot of money on unnecessary wormers and it's nicer for the horses too. If you have questions about how to manage the process with a lot of horses, get in touch for ideas.

Interesting day yesterday.
Got a batch of samples in together to make sure all systems were in place.
Some very low counts. Some middling counts. One very high count. Interestingly from a horse who's had severe worm problems in the past.

* This test looks for Strongyle and roundworm eggs. Worming is still usually required for tapeworm and encysted redworm which won't be detected.
