Seeing your pets grow up in front of our eyes is one of the biggest privileges we have as veterinary staff, and today we celebrated Remy’s 1st birthday AND his 12 month final puppy development check🥺

We have it on good authority that he is the best boy, he loves a snuggle, and he still thinks he’s a tiny 5kg lap dog🤣

Happy birthday Remy! We hope your day is as perfect as you are🎉🥰

Fireworks season is upon us. Here are some tips for dog owners;

💥 Put loud music on or an action film. Start it before the fireworks as once an anxious dog has heard them, muffling the noise tends not to work.

💥 Allow your pet to hide if they want to, do not try to force them to get over it. Create a little den they can go into.

💥 Use a thunder shirt or make a homemade one.

💥 Feed them early as a frightened pet will likely not eat.

💥 Take them for a long walk in the day to burn off some energy, so that they can relax in the evening.

💥 Lead walk anxious dogs as they could run away from you if they hear fireworks.

💥 Place trainers on a cool setting and put them in the tumble drier, before fireworks start and run them throughout the fireworks display. Animals pick up on the booms of fireworks not just the sound and this method replaces those bangs.

💥 Get in touch with your vets who can offer advice, calming sprays, natural calming supplements or if required medication to help them through these stressful periods.

When collides with

Such a lovely Google review to finish the week on, from Leah & little Lilo;

"A brilliant vets!
My cat, Lilo, cannot stand travelling/being in new places/being handled/new people (basically all the things required for a vet visit!) but Portland go out of their way to make sure that the experience is as comfortable as possible for her. Lilo was diagnosed here with hyperthyroidism and every step of the testing/medication process has been clearly explained to me by the vet, Katie.

Katie is great with Lilo... and me - she doesn't hesitate to answer my many questions on the phone!! All the veterinary nurses are also brilliant and gentle with Lilo when she needs her bloods taken - which would not be possible without their patience. The staff at reception whom I have spoken to, Ria, Emma and Nicole, are friendly, respond quickly to emails/pets app/phone calls, and make the whole process as easy as possible.

The cat zone waiting area is also ideal!! Thanks all

It’s Feel Good Friday and who wouldn’t feel better after seeing this photo of tiny little Bear?❤️🐾

Bear had his 2nd vaccination this morning and he was such a brave boy. Our student nurse Nicole wanted to take him home!😆

Well done for being the best patient, Bear🥰

Your votes have made us a Nextdoor Fave Award 2026 winner for pet care!

You can’t apply for this one or buy it. It comes from local neighbours, which is what makes it special.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote. It genuinely means a lot to the whole team here at Portland Vets East Grinstead.

We regularly receive enquiries from cat owners (yes we know you are but mere servants 😉) asking about our facilities.

We have been a Cat Friendly Gold Accredited practice for several years now and that means we have achieved the highest level possible, to ensure your cats visit is as low stress as possible.

However it’s lovely to hear directly from other cat owners. So this we thank Julie-Anne for such a detailed Google review and lovely picture.

“The staff are all lovely, they took excellent care of my 16 year old tripod cat. He has had 3 appts so far and the vet and the nurses were careful and gentle when they were checking him and taking his blood pressure. He was so relaxed the second time he was having his blood pressure done that he started to doze off!

The vet and the nurses talked me through what they was doing and answered all my questions without rushing me which was great. I have had vets in the past rush me when I had serious questions that I needed answered to make the best choices for my cats, including when I was asking questions to make end-of-life decisions.

The surgery is very clean and has a seperate area in the waiting room for cats which makes it less stressful for both cats and dogs waiting to be seen.

I am very pleased with the care that he has recieved and would reccomend Portland vets to everybody with pets.”

It can be confusing to know what to do if you come across a stray dog. Sometimes it may seem as though veterinary practices don’t want to help, but we really do.

As a veterinary practice, we have a responsibility to help where we can, while also following the law and protecting the health of the animals already in our care. Some of our patients may be very poorly, very young or elderly, and bringing a dog with an unknown vaccination and health status into our kennels, could potentially put these vulnerable patients at risk.

This is why it is important that stray dogs are dealt with through the appropriate local authority and dog warden for the area where the dog was found.

This doesn’t mean we don’t care. We absolutely do, and we want to help make sure every stray dog gets to the right place and has the best chance of being reunited with their owner.

The dog warden service for East Grinstead is handled by Mid Sussex District Council.

IMPORTANT: The local authority responsible is the one covering the area where the dog was FOUND, even if the dog has since been taken somewhere else.
