Three permissions.

Not airplane mode in your pocket.
Somewhere else entirely.
The car, the cottage, the bottom of a bag you are not carrying.
Here is why this matters more than it sounds like it should.
Your dog cannot see your phone, but they can feel what it does to you.
The slight tension that arrives the second it buzzes.
The half second where your attention leaves the walk and goes somewhere else entirely.
None of this is dramatic.
None of it would show up on camera.
But your dog is co-regulating with your nervous system, and a nervous system that is partly somewhere else is not the same nervous system to walk next to.
This is the one Lou finds hardest.
Genuinely fine with unplanned time, completely happy going with the flow, and then gets twitchy the second she remembers there are messages unanswered or something unresponded to.
The phone-away rule exists partly to remove the temptation entirely, because once it is buzzing in a pocket the willpower required not to check it is its own kind of work.
The walk where you are genuinely unreachable is a completely different walk for your dog, because you are a completely different person on it. Not performing relaxed. Actually relaxed.

On holiday there is often, genuinely, nothing to brace for.
๐ซNo phone call
๐ซNo client,
๐ซNo deadline
๐ซNo thing that needs fixing.
And yet a lot of us carry the bracing anyway, out of habit, because the body has learned to expect something and has not yet been told the threat has passed.
If your shoulders are still up around your ears. If your jaw is tight for no obvious reason.
If you are holding the lead more firmly than the situation requires. These are all worth noticing.
The important part is what you do next, which is nothing.
Not fixing it, not forcing your shoulders down.
Just noticing. In our experience, simply noticing the bracing is often enough to start letting it go on its own.
The body tends to release what it is no longer being asked to hold once it realises nothing is actually coming.

Not every moment of every day needs a plan.
The big walk, the big outing, by all means plan those properly. But somewhere in each day, leave a gap.
This is harder for some people than others. Ciara likes a plan.
Genuinely likes one.
Without some shape to the day she finds it properly hard to relax, because the not knowing is its own kind of effort for her, not a holiday from effort. Lou finds this part easier, can happily drift through an unplanned afternoon without a flicker of discomfort.
Neither way is wrong.
The point is knowing which one you are, and letting yourself switch off in the way that actually works for you. For Ciara that might mean a loose plan rather than no plan at all. For Lou it might mean nothing booked beyond getting out the door.
Your dog reads the absence of a rush as much as they read the presence of one. However you get there is the right way to get there.
That is the list.
Three things, not ten. Easy to write down, considerably harder to actually do, and worth trying anyway.
