🐶 Scampi 🐶

Scampi (3 yrs, male) has come into our care this week after his owner reached out for support due to a change in their family dynamic. He is quite overweight so has started a healthy eating regime to help him gently lose some of his excess weight and get down to a more slender size. It is likely Scampi will need BOAS surgery too as his breathing is very strained and he struggles to walk more than 5-10 minutes without collapsing. We will have him assessed by our own vet, but are aware his previous vet recommended surgery at a prior appointment. Aside from his health issues, he is a social and playful boy, who has settled in well with his foster family. He will no doubt thrive once his weight and breathing issues have been addressed and will be able to enjoy lovely walks in the countryside.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A TRIAL NIGHT

We just thought we would do a little story on how important a trial night is for everyone involved. We had a guest coming to stay Thursday night for a 2 nights as a trial
Little Hamish had never been away from his family before & he was 3 years old. His owners wanted to start going away & they thought to try this well in advance. On arrival he was happy and playful as any dog can be but later in the evening he became very vocal & was barking quite a bit at birds, noises & nothing in particular which is a bit of a pug thing! The barking went on for quite a while so when it was cool enough around 9pm he was taken out for a walk hoping that he would settle afterwards
After the walk he went to sleep but still reacted to every sound if there was one made. At around 10.45 he was put in his bed and crate that his owners brought. Within minutes the barking and crying started. We always know that the first night away can be a little worrying for them so we tried to leave him around half an hour. By 11.30 the barking and crying hadn’t stopped and being conscious of neighbours I had to take him into a different room. He was barking on the landing quite a lot at nothing and by 12.30 I decided in hope that if I took him in my bed he would settle then I could tell the owners the next day this wouldn’t work. Unfortunately being in bed with me made no difference and he still continued to bark and pace the bed all night. After absolutely no sleep i broke the news to the owners that the night was unsuccessful and that he would need to be collected. They came that morning & said that they had a feeling he would do that, he had stayed in a holiday accommodation with them and he was put in the room next to them in his crate and barked all night that was with the owners there
Some dogs just don’t like being away from home it’s as simple as that. He also had some issues on a walk where he was throwing himself at cars going by again this is something to be wary of as we have to be able to walk dogs safely.
The owners were very apologetic and I said to them it’s not their fault for trying.
They now know that it won’t work so they will have to make arrangements where he won’t be left outside of his home
This post is just to say that no matter how much we want it to work some dogs are just not suited to home boarding & we will always put the dogs welfare first
Also sometimes dogs have issues that they need to work through before it can even be approached. He was a lovely dog but pugs are strong willed & we have to have everything align for it to work well for all involved 💙❤️

We again reiterate the importance of a trial night, this is a prime example. People ask us why we need one or say "my dog will be fine without one" This is why we always do at least one! We also advise not to book any holidays and rely on the boarding prior to a trial night taking place.
