Every horse owner dreads the thought of an infectious disease arriving at their yard, but it’s something for which we all need to be prepared. Having a plan of what to do if a horse becomes sick is a vital part of reducing the spread and minimising the number of horses affected 🦠

Vet Celia Marr from Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons, who chairs our Equine Infectious Diseases Advisory Group, shares her top tips.

Something to consider tomorrow 🚨

📢 ATTENTION ALL HORSE OWNERS 📢

At 3pm on Sunday 23 April, the government's new emergency alerts system will be tested nationally. The system is designed to alert people to life-threatening situations, such as severe flooding, fires or extreme weather.

The alert will be sent to all mobile phones and tablets, which will...
🔴 make a loud, siren-like sound, even if the device is set on silent
🔴 vibrate
🔴 read out the alert

The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds. Remember that the loud noise could potentially startle your horse, so factor this into any activities that you have planned. It may be sensible not to ride or handle your horse when the alarm is scheduled, or to set your device to aeroplane mode or temporarily switch it off if you're going to be on the yard.
