Galedin Veterinary- Equine Our journey to become Galedin Vets began over 100 years ago. But how do you pronounce 'Galedin'? Well, that depends on who you ask, but we say it "Gah-Ledd-Inn".

Our diverse team of experts with over 40 years of combined clinical experience ensure your horse receives top-quality treatment, helping them perform at their best. In 1817, Robert Glaister was invited and paid 50 guineas by the Border Union Agricultural society to move his practice from Wooler in Northumberland, to Kelso. Whether it's your small household pet, your horse or your livestock that need our attention, our team of over 30 vets have broad collective experiences to ensure that your animal gets incomparable care.

Practice makes perfect, and that was certainly the case on Wednesday when Michael and Ryan joined vets, doctors, nurses, vet nurses and ground staff at the annual Kelso Racecourse Moulage.

This is an important and invaluable event where the whole team comes together to plan, prepare and practice for all sorts of challenges.

This year's major issue was a simulated horse collapse through the railing after finishing, taking out some members of the crowd in the process.

Could your horse be showing signs of Cushing's Disease (PPID)? 🤔

PPID is a common condition in older horses and early testing can help identify the condition and support long-term health and wellbeing.

The ACTH blood test is the main way to diagnose PPID. A blood sample is analysed for ACTH levels, with raised levels indicating the possibility of the condition.

🕘 When should you test?
ACTH levels naturally fluctuate throughout the year, especially in summer and autumn. While autumn is often the recommended time for testing, horses showing signs of PPID or health changes can be tested year round.

If you’re concerned your horse may have PPID, please get in touch on 01361 883742 for advice and support.

❤ World Animal Remembrance Month ❤

Today, during World Animal Remembrance Month, we pause to honour the horses and cherished companions who are no longer with us.

As equine vets, we know the bond between a horse and their owner is unlike any other. Every horse leaves a lasting mark and saying goodbye is never easy.

We feel privileged to have been part of so many horses' lives, supporting them through every stage, from their first steps to their final moments. To everyone remembering a much loved horse today, please know you're not alone. Their memories, their personalities and the joy they brought will never be forgotten.

If you'd like to remember a special horse, we'd love for you to share their name and a favourite photo in the comments. Together, we can celebrate the incredible animals who have touched our lives.

28 August – Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 🌈❤

Today, on Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, we remember the horses, ponies and donkeys who have left lasting hoofprints on our hearts.

They may no longer be by our side, but they'll never be forgotten.

If you'd like to, share a photo or tell us about the special horse you're remembering today. We would love to hear from you.

Did you know Atypical Myopathy is a risk in autumn? 🍂

As the leaves fall, cases of Atypical Myopathy can increase in horses and ponies grazing pastures with sycamore trees.
This serious and often life-threatening muscle disease is linked to the ingestion of sycamore seeds, seedlings, or leaves, particularly during damp, windy autumn weather.

If you’re unsure about your pasture risk this autumn, speak to your vet team for advice.
