Did you know that almost half of the dogs in the UK are overweight! 🐕

To try and combat this our nurse, Kirsten, has been running monthly weight clinics.

We have another success story to share from "Woof Watchers"

Archie at the start of the year weighed in at just over 18kg and has now hit his goal of 14kg. His owners recently left us a lovely message:

"Thank you for all your support, advice and encouragement for Archie and for us. It was especially welcome when it got tough, it would have been easy just to give him that extra treat but you gave us the motivation with Woof Watchers to keep going."

If you think this is something your pet could benefit from drop us an e-mail 📧 ([email protected]) or a message on Whatsapp 📞(07426719203)

We had the pleasure this week of vaccinating a litter of Ragdoll kittens for one of our lovely clients.

Some of our team were even lucky enough to get a cuddle with a few of them before they left - definitely a perk of the job!

The kittens were affectionately named: Parma ham, Honey, Bacon Bits, Beans, Hock and John Pork! 🐾

🦔 A little hedgehog update! 🦔

Yesterday we had three hedgehogs from different areas in Dunfermline handed into our practice.

It seemed like a good opportunity to share some advice from the SSPCA when they came to collect the hedgehogs this morning:

At this time of year, it is quite normal to see adult hedgehogs out during the day. They may be busy gathering nesting materials or if they're mothers, foraging for food to feed their young.

The SSPCA has asked that healthy adult hedgehogs are not picked up or brought into a vet practice just because they are active during the day. If the hedgehog appears bright, mobile, and uninjured it is often best to leave it where it is.

However, if you find a very small baby hedgehog (around the size of the palm of your hand) these should be brought to your nearest veterinary practice as soon as possible, as they are unlikely to survive without help.

If you're ever unsure whether a hedgehog needs assistance, please don't hesitate to give us a call or a WhatsApp message for advice before intervening.

Thank you for helping us look after our local wildlife! 🦔🧡

🦷 Why a "simple scale and polish" can sometimes become more than expected 🦷

When pets are booked in for a dental scale and polish, our team will perform a full oral examination once they are under a general anaesthetic. This allows us to thoroughly assess parts of your pets mouth that may not be visible while a pet is awake during an appointment. This is why treatment plans can sometimes change while your pet is in with us.

Recently, one of our clients' pets, George, attended for a routine dental clean. However, after examining inside George's mouth our team found some tooth decay which was not visible during a consultation appointment. Once under anaesthetic, a detailed examination revealed the affected tooth, allowing us to provide the most appropriate treatment.

This highlights why a dental procedure involves much more than cleaning the visible surfaces of the teeth. A thorough assessment under anaesthetic helps us identify hidden problems such as decay, fractured teeth, pockets of infection, mobile teeth and other painful conditions that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Regular dental checks remain important but some dental disease can only be diagnosed once a pet is safely anaesthetised and a complete examination can be carried out.

If you have any questions about your pet's dental health, our team is always happy to help. 🐾

Another star 🌟 from Kirsten’s weight clinics is Poppy. She has lost 11kg in weight and gone from hating coming into the vets and the dread scales to running in and jumping on them!

Well done 👏
