As there is no treatment, prevention is critical for flock health.

⚠ Test & Cull - Use blood or milk testing to identify carriers and remove them, along with their offspring, from the flock.

⚠ Strict Biosecurity - Prevent the introduction of the virus by only purchasing sheep from MV -accredited flocks.

⚠ Quarantine: Always test and isolate bought-in animals before they join the main group.

Regular screening and prompt investigation of wasting or pneumonia are the best ways to protect your flock's efficiency.

So if they're looking interested, it might not be because they can see you... they probably smelled you first! 👃😂

Case Spotlight – Tail Amputation

This heifer was seen by Nicola for a tail injury that wasn't healing despite treatment. The damage was caused by a restriction in blood flow to the tail, which can happen if something becomes tightly wrapped around it, such as tail tape, the tail getting caught, or occasionally dung matting around the tail hair.

If caught early, these injuries can often be treated by removing the cause and managing any wounds. Unfortunately, in this case the injury was too severe and a tail amputation was the best option.

The procedure was carried out on-farm with pain relief, antibiotics and an epidural. She stood beautifully throughout and was a fantastic patient.

We're pleased to say she's now back out at grass and the tail has healed well. 🌱

A practical neonatal cria checklist - For every newborn cria:-

☑️ Check the cria is bright and responsive.
☑️ Make sure it stands and nurses effectively.
☑️ Dip or treat the navel according to your vet's advice.
☑️ Weigh the cria on day one.
☑️ Weigh the cria daily for the first 2 weeks - twice daily if any concerns.
☑️ Watch for nursing behaviour, not just time spent near the udder.
☑️ Make sure the dam has milk.
☑️ Check the cria's temperature if it seems dull or weak.
☑️ Arrange IgG testing from 24 hours of age, especially for any higher risk cria.

Most cria emergencies begin with small warning signs. Careful observation and prompt action are the keys to good neonatal care.

We are proud to support this year's Farm Safety Week (20-24 July 2026), the annual campaign led by The Farm Safety Foundation (Yellow Wellies).

Too many lives are changed in an instant - this farm safety week we ask you to stop and think before carrying out a task. Just because something has always been done in a certain way doesn't mean it's without risk.

Working with livestock can be unpredictable and dangerous, so even small changes can make a big difference. Take a moment, assess the risks, make safer choices to help prevent tragedies on our farms.

🌟STAFF SPOTLIGHT 🌟

I have worked at Parkside Vets as a large animal and equine vet since December 2019, and I was promoted to the position of Senior Large Animal and Equine Vet in May 2024. Prior to working at Parkside, I worked as a mixed vet in a small, rural mixed practice in Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire.

My favourite parts of the job are doing a bit of detective work to figure out what is wrong with our patients, and the fact that no two days are the same. I really enjoy learning new skills. On the people side of the job, we can build long-lasting relationships with our clients and feel like we are part of the rural community that we serve.

My least favourite parts of the job are delivering bad news and performing euthanasia - they sadly never get any easier, but it is a crucial part of the job allowing our animals to go with dignity.

My special clinical interests are obstetrics, herd and flock health planning and preventative medicine.

I have two Border Collies called Jack and Ollie - they come everywhere with me and act as good company while I'm out on calls. I also have a cat called Snoop who pretty much lives to eat and sleep. I had my old horse, Tari, for nearly 20 years but he sadly passed away in January 2026 and has left a rather large horsey shaped hole in my life!

In my spare time, I like exploring new walks with the dogs, watching true crime documentaries, photography (which I usually combine with dog walking) and horse riding.

ASSESS YOUR RISK - PROTECT YOUR BUSINESS - DEFEND YOUR STOCK

Farmers in England, Scotland and Wales are being urged to consult their vet about vaccinating their herd or flock against Bluetongue serotype 3 (BTV-3) as part of a ‘battle bluetongue’ campaign which is running across the industry.

As there is no treatment for the disease, BTV-3 continues to pose a significant threat to both cattle, sheep, goats and camelids, with potential impacts on animal health, productivity, and trade. Therefore, slowing the disease spread through vaccination and restricted movements in affected areas remains the best defence.

We wanted to share this recent post from SRUC Veterinary Services highlighting the risks of ragwort poisoning in cattle.

Ragwort toxicity can develop following long-term exposure, with clinical signs often not appearing until significant liver damage has occurred. Prevention through pasture management and forage inspection is key.

five point plan for sheep lameness?

Vaccinate, treat, avoid, quarantine, and cull.

A three year study in Wales came to an end last year which
found all ten farms improving their lameness control scores
by 94% - a collective £54,000 annual saving.

We suspect many adopt three points of the plan, but to be truly
effective, as shown in the study, five is the magic number.

Spot the signs early, act quickly, and work with your vet to
stay one step ahead. ✅
