As the leaves change and autumn sets in, it’s important to remember that laminitis doesn’t take a season off. Even though the weather is cooler, horses are still at risk.

Laminitis can be triggered by factors such as changes in diet and rich pastures. In addition, horses with uncontrolled PPID (Cushings) are at even greater risk of laminitis in the autumn. Frosty grass is as dangerous for laminitis as the classic lush green spring grass we all think of.

What to watch for:
🐴Lameness
🐴Heat in the hooves
🐴Changes in behaviour

Prevention tips
💚Be mindful of rich pasture and sudden changes in diet
💚Keep up with regular trims and hoof health checks
💚Keep your horse’s weight in check to avoid additional stress on their hooves
Keeping your horse healthy through every season is key to preventing laminitis.

Firework season can be a worrying time for horse owners. Taking a few simple steps in advance can help reduce stress and keep your horse safe and comfortable.

Here are a few simple steps you can take now:
1) Check fences, gates and stable doors for any repairs that need doing.
2) Consider how your horse has responded to fireworks before. Would they be happier stabled in or turned out.
3) Keep to your horse's normal routine as much as possible.
4) Ensure your horse is microchipped and wearing identification, if appropriate.
5) Speak to your vet early if your horse has struggled with fireworks before - there
are management strategies and where appropriate, medications that may help.

Remember, it's always easier to prepare before the fireworks begin than to react once they're underway.

If you are concerned about how your horse may cope this firework season, contact our team for advice. We are here to help keep your horse safe, calm and comfortable.

As horses move into winter, an autumn dental check helps keep them comfortable and healthy.

🐴Prepare for winter – Ensures efficient chewing as forage replaces grass
🐴Support weight & feeding changes – Helps horses cope with altered diets and maintain condition.
🐴Improve performance – A comfortable mouth supports better contact and overall way of going.

A check now can help prevent problems later and keep your horse feeling their best through winter.

🌈 27 August – Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 🌈

Today, on Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, we remember the horses, ponies and donkeys who have left lasting hoofprints on our hearts.

They may no longer be by our side, but they'll never be forgotten.

If you'd like to, share a photo or tell us about the special horse you're remembering today.

Did you know Atypical Myopathy is a risk in autumn?

As the leaves fall, cases of Atypical Myopathy can increase in horses and ponies grazing pastures with sycamore trees.
This serious and often life-threatening muscle disease is linked to the ingestion of sycamore seeds, seedlings, or leaves, particularly during damp, windy autumn weather.

If you’re unsure about your pasture risk this autumn, speak to your vet team for advice.

Some of you may have noticed a new voice answering the phones in our equine office over the last few months, or may have spotted a new face if you have popped in to collect medication. We are very lucky to have had Melissa helping us out in the office while Jennifer is on maternity leave.

🚨STAFF SPOTLIGHT - MELISSA🚨

I have worked at Parkside Vets for over 9 years as a receptionist on the small animal side of the practice, and recently joined the equine team in February of this year. I am part of the busy reception team at the Dundee and Barnhill branches as well as working with the office team while Jennifer is on maternity leave.

I have worked in many different fields over the years from TV sets to admin and training as a florist before working on the front desk at The Discovery and The Verdant Works.

The animals are my favourite part of the job, especially seeing so many different varieties of animals on a daily basis. I love the fact I can come to work and have the opportunity to cuddle so many dogs - where else could you do this?

The hardest part of my job is saying goodbye to our furry clients who we have known for many years.

In my spare time, I spend all of my time with my three little dogs - they are my life. We go everywhere together and I wouldn't have it any other way. If we are not curled up on the couch, we will be out walking in the park or down by the beach. I love to read and have more books than bookshelves at this point! I also like to rescue all house plants that are in desperate need - I have over 40 plants in my care at the moment. I have also recently taken up embroidery as a new hobby.

I've grown up around animals from my first love - cats to terrapins, many a fish to guinea pigs and now dogs. I have three little dogs - Bella (Patterdale), Emma (Chihuahua) and Mika (Heinz Variety).

🐴CASE SPOTLIGHT - AERO🐴

This is Aero. Back in March when Aero first arrived to his new home and owner, he decided he also wanted to meet his new vets right away! This youngster came off the lorry and before long, into a fence - causing himself a wound on the leg.

After careful examination by vet Nicola, it was decided the top section of the wound needed stitches while the bottom section was more of a graze and left to heal itself. After he was stitched up, a bandage was placed to keep it clean.

At the 3 day check up the wound was already well on its way to healing and it was decided to leave the bandage off – a decision Aero was very happy with! Since then, he has settled into life with his new owner and you’d barely know of his initial antics.

The stitch up was done under standing sedation with a local anaesthetic block and pain relief on board. We were grateful to his previous owner who kindly waited with their lorry to act as a secure area to do this, as there were no stables available.

Another example of how as first opinion ambulatory vets we will always work as a team and use what we have available to get the job done!

Some respiratory noise during work can be normal, but it’s worth investigating if you notice a change in respiratory noise or a new noise.

Common signs to look out for:
🐴 Wheezing or whistling
🐴 High-pitched noises
🐴 Noisy breathing
🐴 Coughing
🐴 Gurgling or "rattly" breathing
🐴 Reduced performance
🐴 Increased respiratory effort

These signs can be linked to airway inflammation or conditions such as Equine Asthma, or other upper airway issues.

If you’re unsure, try filming your horse during exercise and share it with your vet, it can really help with assessment.

Early checks are always better than waiting for symptoms to progress.
