MANTRAILING FAQ 🐾
“What if my dog struggles?”

Then we help them.

That’s it.

If a trail is too difficult, we make it easier.
If the environment is too much, we change it.
If your dog is nervous, we adapt the setup.

The whole point of mantrailing is helping dogs succeed.

Some dogs fly through immediately.
Some need a couple of goes before the penny drops.

Both are normal.

But I’ve genuinely never had a dog who couldn’t do it.

Dogs are built to use their nose.
We’re just turning it into a game.

Not All Puppies Read The Same Rule Book 🐾

One of the things we explored in puppy class this week was rewards.

By offering different foods and seeing what each puppy preferred, we discovered that what one puppy would do anything for, another wasn’t bothered about at all!

Understanding what really motivates your puppy makes training so much easier.

🤔I think we’ve got enrichment a bit backwards.

Somewhere along the line, people started thinking enrichment meant making food harder to access.

More puzzles.
More obstacles.
More challenge.

But enrichment isn’t about frustration.

It’s about providing opportunities for natural behaviours and choice.

Today Ebby had a bowl, a snuffle ball, a lick pot and a lick toy.

Different textures.
Different rewards.
Different experiences.

And most importantly…

A choice.

If he wanted easy access to food, he had it.

If he wanted to sniff, lick or forage, he could do that too.

One thing many pet dogs don’t get enough of is the opportunity to make decisions for themselves.

Sometimes the best enrichment isn’t making things harder.

It’s simply giving your dog options.

People always think the best part of mantrailing is the dogs finding people.

And don’t get me wrong… that bit is brilliant.

But honestly?

The community side is one of my favourite parts.

Because there’s no competition.

You hide for each other’s dogs.
You celebrate each other’s dogs.
You become part of each other’s journey.

And really quickly, the dogs start recognising their wee fan club too. 😅

You’ll hear:
“OHHH there’s Auntie Gillian!”
“There’s my pal!”
“There’s the person who fed me chicken last week!”

For a lot of reactive or nervous dogs, building positive associations with people in that way is huge.

And for humans? It’s just really nice being around people who get it.

Good dogs.
Good people.
No judgement.

That’s a massive part of why people stay.

I talk a lot about the behavioural signs of pain in dogs.

But honestly? It feels very different when it’s your own dog.

Because when it’s your dog, you don’t WANT to see it.

Quinn is still running, swimming, digging, training and generally behaving like a spaniel tornado 🌪️🐶

But over time there were lots of tiny little signs that started adding up and making me question whether she was as comfortable as she could be.

So after another vet visit, we’ve decided to start a pain trial for her.

Not because she’s stopped enjoying life.

But because sometimes loving our dogs means being brave enough to question whether they’re really as comfortable as we hope they are 🖤

Unfortunately I didn’t get many photos of the dogs…

Things you might not know about me…

I’ve never had matcha.
No idea what it tastes like. No idea what it even is!?!

I don’t like Starbucks or Costa.
And I’ve never used a drive-thru in my life.
Honestly… how does that even work?

I’ve never watched Love Island, I’m a Celebrity, or any of that.
Not even once.

Some things that seem completely normal to other people just feel a bit… strange to me.

But here’s what is normal for me…

I will see the magic in your dog.
Even if you can’t see it yet.

You don’t need to tell me they’re a “good dog”.
I already know.

I’m ridiculously passionate about what I do.
Sometimes to the point where I get frustrated at how dogs are treated.

Because I genuinely believe this:

We don’t fully appreciate how incredible they are.
And we don’t always give them the life they deserve.

Also… I’m quite funny.
(At least I think I am. My clients seem to agree. Ok well at least the dogs laugh at my jokes!!)

A lot of training classes focus on making dogs look obedient.

I’m more interested in helping dogs function in real life.

So yes, we work on:
✔ recall
✔ lead walking
✔ focus
✔ calmness

But we also work on:
🐾 frustration
🐾 confidence
🐾 emotional regulation
🐾 problem solving
🐾 coping around distractions

Because real life is messy.

And I want dogs and humans to know what to do when things DON’T go perfectly.

Teen classes:
