Special Services available to regular clients. They say you should never work with children or animals but I must be crazy as i've worked with kids for the past 12 years and now I'm taking on the animals! (I'm hoping the animals will give me less back chat)

My family has always had dogs, always rescue and always with some quirk, foible or iidisioincrasy unique to that specific dog so, when I set up home in Dumbarton, I had no hesitation in heading to the Cat & Dog Home where I found my canine soul mate, Dexter. Now 4years old Dex started life with more hang ups than a double glazing Call Centre!! After 3 years together, he is now well on his way to the an Agility Star and Tulla, my cocker pup, will be starting soon. I love walking my dogs (and hopefully your dog)-I love the fun they have off the lead, I love seeing them run for the pure joy of it & I love seeing them ALL WAGGED OUT.

Possibly the best scent detection indication I’ve ever seen 😂

“I have had enough of searching. Please rub my belly.”

Scent Detection at All Wagged Out is enrichment first and foremost. I want the dogs to enjoy searching and using their noses.

The indication is important, but having fun is more important.

And sometimes the dog says they’re done.

Last night at Puppy Class we were looking at rewards.

We tried different types of food and explored how we can use play as part of our training too.

And, as always, the puppies had their own ideas 😂

One had sore puppy teeth and decided having a wee chew was much more appealing.

One managed to acquire THREE toys and thought Christmas had come early.

And one really wasn’t interested in playing at all.

But that’s the interesting thing about rewards. Their value isn’t fixed.

What your puppy LOVES today might be less exciting tomorrow. Something they’re not interested in here might be brilliant somewhere else.

Just like us, what they want depends on the individual, the situation and how they’re feeling in that moment.

Good training isn’t just about having rewards.

It’s about learning what your dog actually finds rewarding. ❤️

This isn’t a recall. But it isn’t NOT a recall.

If you’ve ever met Quinn, you’ll know that running is life.

Running, sniffing, digging and exploring the environment are way more rewarding to her than anything I’ve got in my pocket.

So I taught her this.

Come towards me at speed, fire through my legs, then go straight back to whatever you were doing.

No stopping. No sitting. No game over.

She’s still coming back to me, which is why it isn’t not a recall. But it’s about connection and fun, and building a positive association with being near me, without coming back always meaning that something good has to end.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with dogs is assuming:
“I’ve had dogs my whole life.”

Okay.

But this dog has never met YOU before.

I see it all the time with nervous dogs.

People rush over because they love dogs.
They lean over them.
Touch them.
Pressure them.

And the dog gets more worried.

One of my favourite moments in behaviour work is when scared dogs slowly start choosing to come near me.

Not because I forced interaction.
Not because I “showed them who’s boss”.

Just because I listened to them and gave them space.

That’s where trust actually comes from.

If you use Arden Grange paste, you need one of these tube keys!

You’d be amazed how much paste is still hiding in a tube that looks completely empty. I reckon I get almost twice as much out of mine using one.

Cheap. Simple. No more wrestling with the tube. 😂

I got the loveliest videos from one of my Puppy Class clients this week ❤️

She’d been really nervous about letting her puppy off lead. What if she unclipped the lead and he just disappeared?

This week she decided to give it a go.

And he had the BEST time.

He ran, explored, stayed close to his humans and checked back in with them. Most importantly, both puppy and human looked so much more relaxed.

It’s really easy to get so worried about making a mistake with a puppy that we forget to enjoy them.

Recall is something we want to start building while puppies are little, whether that’s safely off lead or using a long line while you build your confidence.

Sometimes puppy training is about building the human’s confidence too.

👃 Please stop pointing out the treat 😂

I see this ALL the time. A dog misses a treat and immediately we’re pointing at it, showing them where it is or picking it up and handing it to them.

I get it. You’re trying to help! 💜

But… it’s a treat. It’s not a £100 note. It’s okay if they miss it.

Sometimes I deliberately throw or drop treats because I WANT the dog to search for them.

Why?

👃 Sniffing is enrichment
🧠 Searching gives them a little problem to solve
🍗 Searching can actually add value to the food
🐕 And it gives your dog an opportunity to use their incredible sense of smell

The way we deliver food matters too:

🍗 Hand it over = food
💨 Ping it across the floor = food + chase
👃 Scatter it = food + sniffing
🧩 Hide it = food + searching and problem-solving

Same treat. Different experience.

So next time your dog misses one, resist the urge to help.

Let them sniff. If they find it, brilliant. If they don’t, that’s okay too.

The enrichment isn’t just eating the treat. The searching is part of the reward. 💜

Have you noticed how dog problems rarely stay the same size?

At first it’s:

“He only does it sometimes.”

Then it’s:

“We just avoid that park.”

Then it’s:

“We only walk at quiet times.”

Then it’s:

“I don’t really enjoy walking him anymore.”

I see this all the time.

People don’t contact me because their dog barked once.

They contact me because they’ve slowly changed their lives around the problem.

They’re driving somewhere quieter.

Avoiding visitors.

Crossing roads.

Planning routes.

Worrying about what might happen.

If that’s you, it might be time for some help.

Because life is too short to spend dreading every walk.
