My family has always had dogs, always rescue and always with some quirk, foible or iidisioincrasy unique to that specific dog so, when I set up home in Dumbarton, I had no hesitation in heading to the Cat & Dog Home where I found my canine soul mate, Dexter. Now 4years old Dex started life with more hang ups than a double glazing Call Centre!! After 3 years together, he is now well on his way to the an Agility Star and Tulla, my cocker pup, will be starting soon. I love walking my dogs (and hopefully your dog)-I love the fun they have off the lead, I love seeing them run for the pure joy of it & I love seeing them ALL WAGGED OUT.

“What if I make a fool of myself?”

You probably will at some point. 😅

We all do.

You’ll hide in bushes.
Trip over roots.
Forget where you parked.
Accidentally walk the wrong direction.
Get spotted hiding in a bush.

That’s part of the fun.

Mantrailing is one of the least judgemental dog spaces I’ve ever been part of.

Nobody expects perfection.
We’re all just out there trying our best with our dogs and having a laugh along the way.

Honestly, having a sense of humour helps far more than having perfect handling skills.

Is Sniffing Really That Important?

When you’re dealing with a big behaviour problem, a wee sniffing game can feel completely insignificant.

It isn’t.

A simple search gives your dog a chance to use their brain, make choices, succeed and get that little boost of:

“I nailed that.”

And when you’re overwhelmed by reactivity, anxiety or nerves, those small wins matter.

Sniffing will not magically fix the problem.

But it can build confidence, give you something fun to do together and tip the scales in your favour.

Small doesn’t mean unimportant.

Get Your Dog Sniffing: Grass Scatter 🌱

This week’s game is beautifully simple: scatter part of your dog’s meal through the grass and let them search.

Start with a small, easy area. Don’t point everything out or rush them. Their nose can do this job perfectly well.

It gives dogs a chance to sniff, forage, solve a problem and slow themselves down, using food you were already going to feed them.

No grass at home? Try it during a quiet walk or use a snuffle mat indoors.

What actually motivates your puppy?

This week in puppy class, we explored rewards, confidence-building and the importance of play.

Because play isn’t just a break from training. It can be one of the most powerful ways to motivate your puppy, reward them and make learning genuinely fun.

Our outdoor classes finish next week, but puppy classes aren’t going anywhere!

Our next classes begin indoors in Cardross on Monday 28th September.

🐾 Haven’t been mantrailing for a while? COME BACK!

Did you absolutely love mantrailing, fully intend to keep coming…

…and then somehow six months disappeared?

Maybe you’re now thinking your dog will have forgotten everything.

They haven’t.

Maybe everyone you started with has progressed way beyond you.

Doesn’t matter.

Every All Wagged Out mantrailing session is mixed level. Your dog could be trailing alongside a dog who’s been doing it for three years or another dog on their very first progression.

The trails are set for the individual dog in front of me. There’s no catching up and no keeping up.

Forgotten what you’re doing?

You’ll fit right in. 😂 I’ve got people who’ve been trailing for years who still forget scent articles and occasionally (REGULARLY!) forget how their harness works.

Just pick a date and come back.

And if you’re nervous because you don’t know who’ll be there?

You’ve already got a friend on the session. Me. And you’re bringing your best friend with you. 💛

All you really need is a dog, a long line, a harness and a sense of humour.

Sometimes we forget that one of the best things we can do for our dogs isn’t teaching another cue.

It’s giving them time to use the nose they were born with.

Sniffing isn’t just about finding interesting smells. It helps dogs explore the world, make choices, build confidence and tire their brains in a way that endless ball throwing never will.

This September, slow down a little. Let your dog sniff that hedge. Scatter a handful of treats in the grass. Hide a favourite toy. Take a different route.

You might be surprised how much those little moments strengthen your relationship.

Here’s to a month full of sniffing adventures. 🐶💚
