The days are getting noticeably shorter now 😩 Squeezing in as many rides as we can before the shadows catch us.

Saturday, we only managed one ride because it was worming day, so all seventeen ponies and Arabs had to come up to have their medicine shot into their mouths 😬

Reggie and Riker went out. Caleb didn’t feel like riding, so I thought I’d try Riker on the longlines in preparation for his hopeful future carriage driving career, and also so he knows his cues for when Caleb wants to go off lead. He was brilliant for his first go. He followed and led, equally comfortable doing both.

Today we managed to squeeze in two rides, first went Reggie, Riva, and Ronnie, then Darcy, Robin, and Rainie on round two. All very good ponies. Ronnie was trying to be a drama queen (he hasn’t been out in a while and he tends towards the dramatic anyway 🙄) but he only flinched at two sabre-toothed pigeons, just enough to keep Caleb on his toes 😂

With all the shows done for this year, we’re back to doing what we do best, happy hacking! We had a lovely Sunday afternoon ride yesterday with Darcy, Rainie and Robin.

Robin has really figured out that he can do second gear now without dying of the strain, and had his second trot under saddle with Merida yesterday. He was happy, calm and relaxed. I didn’t have my phone on me to get a beautiful side on video of him as I ran alongside, but Tash managed to get one after of him popping our usual log on the way home. I really think he’ll be our next young pony following in Reggie’s footsteps in ridden classes next year 🤞🤞🤞

As for Darcy, after experiencing a few strides of canter on the lead rein with Reggie, Merida has been desperate to have a canter on Darcy. But no matter how fast Tash has run, Darcy has remained in trot, though she has performed some fabulous extended trots indeed!

However, we were approaching one of the logs we pop over on the way back home, and Merida was going to trot Darcy over it like usual. I went first with Robin, hopped over, then turned to wait for Darcy, only to see Darcy cantering beautifully down the track towards me and before flying over the log and coming to a gradual controlled stop behind Robin. She kept Merida aboard the whole time.

Despite looking absolutely terrified during the experience, once she’d stopped and realised what she’d done, Merida was over the moon to have ridden her first proper canter, completely off the lead, and rounding it off with a jump over a log to boot.

We should have caught this momentous first on camera, but mommy was too busy covering her eyes until it was all over 😂

Well, what a day we had yesterday at the Concours d’Elegance Society of Great Britain National Championship show.

We’ve never been to anything like it before, only dipped our toes in a couple of concours classes at other shows, but at the TFSS show, Merida and Reggie qualified for the National Concours d’Elegance Junior Rider of the Year class.

After mediocre placings in their booked five classes, we were umming and ahhhing as to whether to stay for the Junior of the Year championship. After an early start and a long day, we were all tired and it was a long wait to get all the other championships out of the way. Plus, we guessed the class would be huge and thought we’d never have a hope of getting anywhere in it.

But Merida was game, so we hung on.

And wow, so glad we did. Despite never having had a side saddle lesson in her life, (we have literally just hired a pilch, slapped it on Reggie, and done a couple of hacks and classes in it), Merida rode as well as if she’d been doing it all her life. Reggie was a star.

We all needed picking up off the floor when, in a strong class of 15 talented young riders from around the country, Merida and Reggie achieved second place in the Junior Concours d’Elegance Rider of the Year!! 😳

What a way to finish up on our last show of the season!

It might have been half nine at night by the time we got home, but it was worth it 🌈🥳

Hoping this is a good luck rainbow for the Concours d’Elegance show we’re off to tomorrow with Reggie 🤞🤞🤞🌈

Yesterday we took Rainie and Reggie to Beaverhall Children’s Show, so it was all on the kids to bring home the ribbons.

Couldn’t be more proud of all of them. Kids or ponies. Rainie and Reggie were perfect.

Came home with lots of firsts, seconds, thirds and a reserve champion 🥳 well done team!

Nice little ride out this evening with the mares. Darcy is getting very good off lead with Merida. I think she’s going to make Merida a smashing first ridden pony. She’s such a good mare. Rainie was a dear as usual as Ezri starts venturing off the lead rein. And 3yo Rio went out and both Merida and Jacob hopped on her for a few short stretches to get her used to the feel of having a rider on board on the trails. She was fabulous. We’ll build her up more next year when she’s four.
