Brockswood

Brockswood We are a sanctuary in Sedgley, caring for and rehabilitating sick, injured, and mistreated animals.

Brockswood Animal Sanctuary is based in Sedgley, West Midlands in the UK. We care for and rehabilitate sick, injured, mistreated and in many cases abandoned and unwanted animals; giving them a safe and happy Forever Home here with us, whilst also endeavouring to restore and renovate the 'Cotwall End' site.

We don't receive funding from the Council or Government, and we are completely reliant on

the kindness and generosity of others in order to keep the sanctuary open and care for all of our animals. Every little helps and we are extremely grateful for your support - our work and successes are only possible thanks to your help and generosity!

Today, we are celebrating the life of a very special member of the Brockswood family – the wonderful Shirley.

Shirley and her husband Kevin have been so much more than supporters of Brockswood. They are part of our little community; familiar faces who we were always happy to see! Shirl was funny, caring, generous, fun-loving and a joy to spend time with. She had some incredible stories and adventures to share, and we could very happily have listened to them for hours.

She also really knew Brockswood. She knew our residents, their names, their stories and their individual quirks – and not only the obvious ones. She noticed everyone, right down to the smallest chicken, and if someone wasn’t out that day she’d notice. She had a particular soft spot for Kevin the pig, for perhaps obvious reasons, and affectionately referred to our team as “the animals’ servants”… a job title we will very happily continue to wear in her honour.

And she supported us in so many ways. She followed what was happening here, bought things to help us and somehow never left empty handed. But it wasn’t what she gave us or bought from us that made her so special.

It was Shirley ❤️

She was simply such a pleasure to be around. Someone who brought warmth, laughter and kindness with her, and someone we feel incredibly lucky to have known and to have had as part of our little Brockswood family.

Our love and thoughts are with all of Shirl’s family and friends.

Thank you for all the chats, the laughter, the stories, the support and the joy, Shirley. We will all miss you enormously, and we know that goes for some of your beloved animal friends too.

And don’t worry – the servants are still on duty 💚🌈

We are absolutely gutted to have to make this announcement, but after watching the weather forecast for the coming days, we have made the difficult decision to reschedule our Annual Fun Day & Dog Show.

With a lot of rain forecast over the next few days and on the day itself, we simply don’t feel it would be right to go ahead. The ground will be very wet, and the safety and enjoyment of our dogs, visitors, stallholders, volunteers and everyone involved has to come first.

We know how many of you have made plans to come along, and we are so sorry for the disappointment and inconvenience this will cause. We’re disappointed too. This is our biggest event of the year, a huge amount of work has already gone into preparing for it, and postponing it is a massive blow for our little sanctuary. But we’re not cancelling - we’re moving it!

🐾 NEW DATE: SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 🐾

We really, really hope you’ll be able to join us then and help us make the rescheduled day every bit as brilliant as we had planned.

If you were planning to come this weekend, please pop the new date in your diary and if you can, share this post far and wide so we can make sure everyone knows about the change.

Thank you, as always, for sticking with us, understanding when we have to make these difficult calls, and supporting Brockswood.

We’ll see you on 26th September!

🚧 CLOSED TODAY – WEDNESDAY 26TH AUGUST 🚧

We’re really sorry for the short notice, but we’ve made the decision to close the sanctuary today while the council carry out resurfacing works on the road directly outside the sanctuary entrance - this has been in desperate need of attention, and they’re working incredibly hard to get it sorted.

Unfortunately, that means we have heavy machinery, plant and lorries immediately outside the entrance, along with disruption to access and our car park. For your safety, we simply don’t feel it would be right to open as normal. We know this will be disappointing if you were planning to visit today, and we’re really sorry!

Unexpected closed days are difficult for a small organisation like ours, so if you had planned to come and see us today, we’d be hugely grateful if you could save your visit another day, and support us once the road is a little quieter! The animals will still be here waiting for you 🐷🦊🦉🐐

Thank you, as always, for understanding - and a big thank you to the crews outside working hard to make the road safer for everybody.

🐾 NEW DATE: SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 🐾

Our annual fun day and dog show is only 4 days away!

We wanted to take this time to give a massive thank you to two wonderful businesses who have helped provide some much needed items for our dog show this year.

Firstly, we want to say a massive thank you to Lillie at Moo Dog Training . Every year Lillie sponsors our rosettes for the dog show. She orders, collects and delivers them to us and we are so grateful for this. The rosettes are the main part of the dog show for the class winners and we cannot thank Moo Dog Training enough for sponsoring them again for another year!

Secondly, we want to thank Andy from 'Natures Pawz Pet Supplies' for sponsoring the treat bags for this years dog show. For all of our class winner bags we include treats for the winners and Andy kindly offered to sponsor this and has created some wonderful treat bags and we are sure they will go down very well!

We have also been having lots of questions for more information on the day regarding opening times and judging times. Here is a breakdown below:

🐾 10am - doors open for visitors. Dog registration also open for class entries
🐾 11am - Judging begins for cutest puppy, followed by the other classes in order from the class poster
🐾 10:30&13:30 - Dog agility demo in the agility area
🐾 10:45&13:45 - Canine scent demo (located at CWB dog training stall)
🐾 2pm - Judging begins for double trouble followed by the other classes in order from the poster

📝 Programmes are available on the day in the cafe to pick up when paying entry with all the times for judging, the order of the classes and other events.

🛍 Stalls are there all day, we have a wonderful variety of stalls this year so do spend time with the local traders and show your support for their small business, it can really make a difference for them.

🎨 We also have face painting on the day along with glitter tattoos from the lovely Caz .

We cannot wait to have you all join us on the day. We are hoping the forecast for the day improves but we wont let a little rain damped the day, and we hope you wont either.

This is perhaps one of the slightly less glamorous things we could ask for help with as an animal sanctuary, because when you think about supporting us you probably think about bags of food, medication for poorly animals, bedding, or even the timber and materials that eventually become their homes.

You probably don’t immediately think… tools.

But the truth is, behind so much of what happens here is someone building, repairing, adapting or trying to work out how we are going to fix something that has broken at the least convenient moment!

We carry out a huge amount of our work in-house. Partly because we’re lucky to have people here with some brilliant skills, but also because it means we can keep costs down and make the kind donations we receive stretch much further.

Our workshop has always been an important part of Brockswood, even if it isn’t necessarily one that visitors see. Our team use it, some of our lovely volunteers use it, and now we are beginning to look at what else this little corner of the sanctuary might become.

We are currently in the process of developing a Men’s Shed/Community Workshop project here too - somewhere people can come together, use the skills they already have, learn new ones, make and repair things, have a chat and hopefully find a bit of purpose and belonging along the way!

There is a real opportunity to create something which benefits the sanctuary, our residents and the people around us too. Something practical, useful and genuinely part of the community who have helped us so much 💚

Before we can get too carried away with all of that though, we need to put some work into the workshop itself, and this is where we’re hoping somebody out there might be able to help.

Good tools and machinery are expensive. We’ve always been quite reserved about spending donations on them because, understandably, a new drill doesn’t quite have the same obvious connection to animal care as a veterinary bill. Except, really, it does!

That drill might build a shelter. Repair a home. Put up fencing. Make enrichment. Help a volunteer learn a new skill. Or still be sitting in our workshop doing all of those things years from now.

So we thought it was worth asking… Are there any businesses, manufacturers, suppliers, tradespeople or lovely individuals out there who might be interested in supporting our workshop with tools, machinery or equipment?

That could be through new equipment, company sponsorship, or good-quality, safe and serviceable tools that have been upgraded or are no longer being used. Power tools, hand tools, workshop storage, benches, machinery - if it helps make a workshop work, we’d love to hear from you.

And, as ever, you don’t necessarily have to have something to donate to help us. If somebody springs to mind while you’re reading this, please tag them. Share the post. Send it to the person at work who knows the person who knows the person - you never quite know where these things might lead!

🐾 NEW DATE: SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 🐾

This year’s classes for our annual fun day and dog show are listed on the poster below.

The classes are just £2 to enter and you can enter as many as you like on the day.
As always puppies, golden oldies and rescues will be one of the first to be judged as we know some of these can get quite tired with a busy day ahead and may be a little more sensitive.

The class list will be judged in order as seen on the poster. Registration opens from 10am and will be situated next to the judging ring and open all day for entries.

On the day there will be programmes available to pick up from entry with the times classes will be judged and along with any extras happening on the day such as ‘have a go dog agility’ with Rainbow mutts agility and canine scentwork demonstrations with CWB Dog Training

We look forward to seeing everyone on the day! Any questions please pop us a DM or email [email protected]

🐾 NEW DATE: SATURDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 🐾

There’s less than 2 weeks to go until our annual fun day and dog show!

This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, with all profits raised going back into the care of our rescued residents.
We have lots of wonderful stalls joining us again this year, with some providing some essential skills such as canine CPR!

Later this week we will be posting dog show updates regarding classes, times etc however, in the meantime should you have any questions please don’t hesitate to pop us a message.

Don’t forget to save the date and share with friends/family. We cannot wait to see you all there! 🐾

Our Teddy Bears Picnic is coming to Brockswood!

Food and refreshments will be available from the sanctuary, but you’re very welcome to bring your own picnic as well.

Tickets include sanctuary admission for one child and one supervising adult, with additional family members welcome to join in with a visit to the sanctuary at normal admission price. Admission is £4.75 for everyone over the age of 3, and under 4s go free.

☀️ WE ARE CLOSED TODAY ☀️

With temperatures forecast to reach around 37°C today, our team needs to be able to concentrate entirely on the animals - keeping water topped up, providing pools, wallows and cooling, and closely monitoring everyone throughout the hottest part of the day. We also have to consider the safety of our visitors and amazing team!

And this photo rather sums up what the prolonged hot, dry weather is doing to Brockswood. This paddock should be green! Weeks without rain have left our paddocks dry and increasingly bare, with the ground itself now cracking in places. Timber around the sanctuary is drying, shrinking and splitting too, including fence posts and rails, adding yet more repairs to the already considerable workload of our maintenance team. And with so much dry grass and vegetation, particularly after seeing wildfires locally this summer, fire risk is never far from our minds.

Closing during the summer holidays isn’t something we ever want to do, and losing a day of visitor income matters to a small sanctuary like ours, but sometimes looking after Brockswood means knowing when not to open the gates and we’re so grateful to you for supporting that 💚

12/08/2026

It’s been another very hot day here, and with the temperatures we’ve been having lately, our days don’t necessarily finish when the gates close!

Tonight some of us stayed behind a little longer to make sure everyone was settled, comfortable and coping okay with the lingering heat - which happened to mean we were still here as the eclipse started to pass over us.

Sitting with the animals, watching the light change across the sanctuary and knowing that everyone was okay was a happy moment.

The hot weather does unfortunately mean we have an important update for tomorrow. With temperatures currently forecast to reach around 37°C, we will be CLOSED to visitors on Thursday 13th August.

At those temperatures we simply need our team’s attention to be entirely on the animals, while also recognising that spending several hours walking around an outdoor site in that heat isn’t something we can responsibly encourage our visitors to do!

We’ll talk a little more tomorrow about what this prolonged hot and dry spell actually means for the sanctuary. For tonight, though, everyone is safe, watered and settled… and we’re heading home. 🌙☀️

Thank you, as always, for understanding when we have to put the animals first 💚
