Dalmatians 🖤🤍🤎
Did you know the Dalmatian is a breed that has been around for thousands of years? There are paintings and artifacts of Dalmatians from the ancient Egyptian and Greek periods, where they were thought to be used as hunting dogs.
The breed was established later in Croatia, in the region Dalmatia where it was given its name and standardisation.
During conflicts in Europe people of Dalmatia would use the Dalmatian for their natural alertness and guarding instincts which made them amazing guard dogs. They would patrol military perimeters and alert troops of any danger.
Around the 17th century they were used as a carriage dog. They would run alongside horse and carriages to protect the horses, guard valuables and clear a path for the coaches. While they weren’t the only breed to do the job, the Dalmatian had a unique natural affinity for horses and the endurance to run for hours on end and they became the only breed recognised as a carriage dog.
During this time only the wealthy aristocrats could afford to own Dalmatians and they were shown off as a flex of wealth.
The Dalmatian was eventually adopted by the fire department becoming a fire house dog. The dogs were used as a living siren to alert people and clear the way for the water wagons, and due to their bond with horses they were also used to calm them when they were scared.
Today’s Dalmatians are still apart of the fire service in the US but are now used as mascots who live in the fire stations. They still have a great love for horses and many owners of the breed take up carriage work for sport and to fulfil their dogs need of the job they love so much.
