Recently, as pet professionals, we became aware of a local business advertising dog daycare, overnight stays, and pet boarding services from their home.
When researching the business, we were unable to find evidence of a boarding licence, insurance, or other essential requirements. We later discovered that the business was also unable to provide proof of basic professional requirements such as pet care insurance and other industry-standard credentials.
The vast majority of pet care professionals work extremely hard to meet legal requirements, maintain high welfare standards, and invest significant time and money into obtaining licences, insurance, training, and inspections. These regulations exist to protect both pets and owners.
If a person is providing daycare or boarding services from their own home and charging for those services, they require a licence from their local authority, depending on the services offered and local regulations. Reputable providers should be happy to discuss their qualifications and provide evidence of relevant licences, insurance, and training when requested.
Before booking any pet care service, consider asking for:
✔ Public Liability Insurance
✔ Pet Business Insurance
✔ DBS Check
✔ Pet First Aid Qualification
✔ Relevant Experience and References
✔ Boarding Licence (where legally required)
If you are unsure whether a provider is licensed, you can contact your local council or check their public licensing register.
The safety and welfare of our pets should always come first, and responsible businesses will welcome questions about their credentials.
This is just to make my clients aware that if I am fully booked, then please don't use this uninsured and unlicensed business.
