When did you last do a faecal egg count on your sheep?

Did you know faecal egg counts should ideally be done every 3-4 weeks throughout the grazing season!

Faecal egg counts can also be done as part of your AHWP so if you are due your review again, give us a call so we can get this booked in☎️ Remember AHWP funding is ending in June 2027 so let’s get another review done whilst we have the chance!

Let’s talk about synchronising ewes!🐑🐑

Ewes are short day breeders, meaning they are fertile during the autumn/winter months and lamb around April.

There are a few different ways to sync up your ewes in order to create a tighter lambing period.

Progesterone releasing devices e.g. CIDRs
- These devices mimic the luteal phase of the cycle.
- When they are removed, oestrus is stimulated and therefore ovulation
- This means all the ewes ovulate at the same time, providing a very tight service window and lambing window

Use of vasectomised rams
- Unlike castrated males, vasectomised rams retain their androgen production so they can act as ‘teaser rams’
- These vasectomised rams can be used to get the ewes cycling, so when the rams go in during the next oestrus cycle, all the ewes should be cycling and therefore can be served.

Melatonin implants
- Implanted in the base of the ear and used for early mating, before peak reproductive activity

For more information regarding synchronising your ewes and getting a tighter lambing period, please give the practice a call☎️

Haemonchus Contortus - the blood sucking 'Barbers Pole' worm that likes hot weather...the perfect summer for it!

Haemonchus is a worm which you may not be familiar with, as it has been typically found in hot countries, but its prevalence is spreading further north in the UK as we get these hot summers, and I am concerned that we are going to see clinical disease after a bit of rain.

Outbreaks are closely linked to weather conditions associated with a sudden change to conditions that favour the worm – for example dry periods followed by a warm wet spell can lead to a sudden high challenge

Clinical signs
Haemonchosis doesn't cause diarrhoea, it is a BLOOD SUCKING worm, so causes ANAEMIA, which can be very acute and severe. Disease affects adults and lambs.

For more information please see the email newsletter, call to speak to one of the vets, or follow this link...

*Bottle Split*

We are splitting a bottle of Covexin 10 on Monday 17th at 1pm and have some doses available, if anyone needs any doses of clostridial vaccine. This will be repeated in four weeks for complete protection.

(Heptavac is currently only available in the very largest bottle sizes).

If you have any animals requiring clostridial protection, please get in touch via email/whatsapp over the weekend and we will be in touch on Monday.
