Fireworks prep

💥 Why you need to prepare your dog for the fireworks NOW!! 💥

You’ve got over a month until the fireworks start, right?

Plenty of time, right?

❌ WRONG! ❌

If you want to help your dog as best you can this firework season, START NOW!

Get YouTube up and search for firework noises, play them on a low volume, gradually increasing every day. 🎆

If your dog is very alert with the noise, add treats in to help! Or give them a filled Kong to chew whilst they listen. ❤️

If your dog is incredibly anxious and fearful of fireworks, it might be that you need a little more preparation it!

But don’t worry, I can help. ✅

Dogs have 40 times more scent receptors than us! 😳

Dogs sniff other dogs in what we see as the most embarrassing places – but really it’s just where the smells are most concentrated. 🙈

Scent passes on an incredible amount of info to a dog. 👃

Scent marking with urine is just how dogs communicate! 🗣️

So next time your dog sniff’s another dogs p*e, consider that he’s not just being rude – he’s using his nose to find out who’s been there before him…

Perhaps a big male, an elderly sick dog, or a female in season. He may have even met these dogs before, which is so exciting! 🐩

It has even been suggested that allowing a dog to sniff like this can reduce dog-dog aggression 🐶 ❤️ 🐶

Are owners to blame for their dog’s behaviour?

🐶Behaviour (such as pulling on lead or jumping up) = sometimes.
🐶Emotion (such as fears and anxieties) = very rarely.

It’s easy to make common mistakes when training a dog, and these things can result in unwanted behaviours, but it’s usually nothing major.

However if your dog’s unwanted behaviour is a result of an emotion, such as fear, it’s highly unlikely you’ve done anything wrong.❤️

Sometimes, mistakes are made, such as

😥 Your dog having a negative / scary experience, especially whilst young

😩 Choosing punishment methods and aversive tools

🫣 Not learning how to communicate with dogs or expecting them to communicate in our language

But if you are doing everything correctly, and your dog is still showing unwanted behaviours, it might be a result of genetics. 🧬

Anxiety, fears, aggression, and many other traits CAN be passed down through generations.

🐶A fearful mum is very likely to have fearful puppies.

🐶An aggressive dog is likely to pass on some aggressive traits.

🐶An emotionally reactive dog is likely to pass that on to their pups.

Even if the most confident and happy dog has a particularly stressful pregnancy, those little puppies will have been taking in all those stress hormones, and will likely be a more stressed / anxious dog.☹️

So, two things to take away from this:

1️⃣ If you have one of these dogs, don’t worry! There are things that can be done to help, and it’s not your fault!

2️⃣ Be very careful when buying puppies. Backyard breeders are NOT good breeders!
