Summer is brilliant - but it does ask a bit more of our horses.

Longer days, warmer temperatures, more sweating, and more energy being used just to stay comfortable. It's the time of year when what they're eating really starts to matter, and when we're most grateful to have Keyflow Feeds as part of our routine.

For our stallions, mares, and youngsters, summer management is about more than just keeping water buckets topped up. It's about making sure they've got the right nutritional support to stay settled, maintain condition, and keep doing what they do - growing, developing, and thriving - even when the heat is on.

Conformation gets talked about a lot in the horse world - but it can feel like a minefield if you're not sure what you're actually looking for. So let's break it down.

Conformation isn't about perfection. No horse is perfect. It's about understanding what a horse's structure tells you about their future soundness, trainability, and longevity.

Here's what we focus on:

🔹 The shoulder - A long, sloping shoulder allows for bigger, freer movement. A upright shoulder tends to produce shorter, choppier strides. For dressage, you want that slope.

🔹 The back - A short, strong back with good muscling is ideal. A very long back can be harder to collect and more prone to weakness. But proportion matters - it needs to fit the horse.

🔹 The hindquarters - This is where the power comes from. Good depth through the hindquarter, with well-angled hocks, gives you the engine for collection and expression.

🔹 The legs - Straight, correct legs reduce the risk of soundness issues down the line. Small deviations are common and manageable. Major faults are worth taking seriously.

🔹 The neck - A well-set, arched neck that comes out of the shoulder correctly makes everything easier - contact, collection, carriage. It's not just about looks.

Conformation is one piece of the puzzle. But understanding it helps you make better decisions - and ask better questions.
