We will travel within a reasonable distance to assist you and your dogs. Downham Market, Kingslynn Wisbech, Littleport. We believe we offer our clients the perfect combination! George has spent more years than he cares to remember working as a police dog instructor, Jacqi is a canine behaviourist, both qualified with canine first aid. Jacqi has just completed a certificate in dog law and is in the process of qualifying as a competitive obedience instructor, she is also a volunteer dog walker for The Cinnamon Trust. The cross over between training and behaviour correction is a very thin line, often a trainer can exacerbate what appears as bad behaviour because they don't necessarily understand where the behaviour has come from, or how to correct it. George & Jacqi will both come to your session and their own dogs have a big part to play too. If your dog has socialisation problem or is reactive to dogs, Otter is used to
help, Jacqi will read his body language as well as your own dogs, ensuring that your dog is always feeling safe and un-threatened. If you're new to training you will observe Minky and then work with her, its really good for you to learn and gain confidence with a dog that can do it, you'll then fully understand what your dog could do with just 5 minutes training a day. Radar works with dogs afraid of larger breeds, in this scenerio Jacqi works Radar at a distance comfortable for your dog whilst George works with you and your dog. New to the team is labradoodle Womble. She's only a pup so hasn't done much work yet but she has been instrumental in helping another youngster finds his confidence. The aim is for her to train up and allow Minky to retire in a couple of years. Jacqi & George don't spend the first session going through paperwork, anything they need to know will come out during conversation and because they read dogs, they will get information from your dog to. If any additional information is needed, that will be done outside of your session and there is no charge. You will receive follow up notes after your first session, as well as useful handouts. They have devised their own progressive training programme for you to follow if you wish and it covers a bit more than obedience training. If your dog is a family dog, you are all more than welcome to the session. Sessions are 1:1 at suitable training venue with. They like training to take place out in the big wide world, dealing with anything and everything within the environment. 1:1 means no waiting around for other dogs and you get exactly what you need. Some problems occur at home so they also do house visits as well as pre-jab puppy visits as so much work can be done with a puppy before they venture out. Minky's Pups is full insured - a copy of the insurance certificate can be found among the page photos. Registered Business Number : 2300164

This young pup had a couple of home visits whilst patiently waiting to be allowed out in to the big wide world. She had previously been to the park however, this was her first training session there - with all the temptations the world has to offer an enthusiastic young puppy!

There is so much for you to teach your dog but for me (Jacqi) the most important two are recall and leave it - why? Well, both can potentially save a life.

Unbearable to think of the consequences of your dog not responding if it's heading in to the path of an oncoming vehicle! Leave it, how does that save a life? Imagine your dog trotting into the house carrying a cube of rat poison ....... which is exactly what happened to one dog we worked with and yes, she responded correctly when she heard 'leave it'.

The basics are exactly that, the very base of everything you do with your dog. This pair did incredibly well today, it's not easy taking on board everything we are saying to you and then getting your timing right, Lorraine totally nailed it at their first session.

Remember - you will only ever get out what you put in!

We have a training slot available at Littleport on Friday morning, let us know if you're interested.

I think we can all relate to this...... it can take a lot of work to make yourself the most exciting thing to your dog.

Yesterday I (Jacqi) had something to say about a handler I had observed at agility.

Please don't think our dogs are perfect, they are not, how we deal with it is important.

Today Minky decided it would be fun to completely ignore me and swim after a duck half way across the relief canal at Stowbridge. Obviously this is completely unacceptable.

When it flew off her game was over so she returned. At which point she went straight back on her lead, I added Womble's lead so she had a little freedom.

Tomorrow, we will go back to the river bank, this time I will have a long line and she will have a refresher course on recall.

I regularly quote Cesar Milan, he says they are first animal, then dog, then breed, finally your pet, meaning, animal instincts kick in first, then dog then breed and last but not least pet instincts.

I think Minky clearly demonstrated her pet instincts had stayed at home in her cosy bed🤦🏽‍♀️

We (Jacqi & Womble) went to an agility show today. I spent some time watching other competitors, it always amazes me how many people enter their dogs in a class and have no recall whatsoever. I fully understand a dog could be anxious and not really tuned in however thats a poor excuse.

One person really stood out though. He took his dog to start position, asked it to sit, obviously didn't sit close enough to him so he tapped it. Dog moved towards him then back to its original position.

He then gave the dog instruction to wait/stay and he moved to his starting point. The dog is now standing and clearly knows its on the starting block. Matey turns around, sees the dog standing and said sit, nothing happened, sit, nothing happened, sit, nothing happened.

Matey now decides to give the dog a 321 countdown, by this time I can see the dog is now quite stressed, so what happens? Off they go, no control with the dog, it bashes down nearly all the jumps and does its own course.

I can't help wondering what either of them achieved/learnt 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️

Well actually, I know what the dog learnt, it learnt he's in charge and he doesn't have to listen to his handler.

Obedience is the base of every single thing you choose to do with your dog and consistency is key.

How do we help dog reactive dogs🤔

Our own dogs play a big part in this. They always start at a distance the reactive dog is comfortable with and slowly work closer. Rarely direct contact can be achieved in one session, more often than not it takes longer.

As well as desensition work, the owner is learning how to read their dog, know at exactly which point their dog is becoming uncomfortable and, very importantly, learning how to manage the situation for their dog.

Sometimes two of our dogs will attend the session, thats the next stage for the dog you see here.
