🚨 BRENDAN RANT INCOMING…

“WHY are we getting so uppity about whether it’s IBD or lymphoma?!”

It’s one of those classic feline medicine dilemmas:

🐱 Chronic enteropathy/IBD?
🐱 Small-cell GI lymphoma?
🐱 Can we actually tell the difference?
🐱 And the controversial one… does it always matter straight away? 👀

Because sometimes you’ve got a cat that feels absolutely rubbish, an owner who doesn’t want to pursue endoscopy/biopsies, and Brendan in the corner saying:

“GIVE THEM THE STEROIDS. THEY’LL FEEL SO MUCH BETTER!”

Now, before the internal medicine specialists come for us… 👀 obviously diagnosis matters, and treatment/prognosis aren’t identical. But in the REAL WORLD of GP practice, how far do you go to differentiate the two — particularly when further diagnostics aren’t an option?

🎧 Brendan gets on his soapbox on this The Chatty Vets Podcast, featuring Lucy from Carus Animal Health, talking all things GI health and GIQuest (faecal calprotectin).

👇 IBD vs lymphoma: how hard are YOU chasing the definitive diagnosis?

Feline chronic inflammatory enteropathy or lymphoma?

Differentiating chronic inflammatory enteropathy from low-grade intestinal T-cell lymphoma in cats can be challenging, particularly when clinical signs and diagnostic findings overlap.

In our latest Vet Times case study, we follow Barney, a 14-year-old cat whose vomiting, diarrhoea and inappetence resolved rapidly with initial management, yet his faecal calprotectin levels remained elevated.

Read Barney’s case and explore how serial faecal calprotectin testing helped inform both investigation and monitoring 🔗 https://www.vettimes.com/clinical/small-animal/inflammatory-enteropathy-or-lymphoma-in-cats-when-clinical-improvement-doesnt-tell-the-whole-story

How does the test work?

From start to finish, GIQuest offers simple, in house, point of care testing, with results in just 15 minutes.

What a great discussion last night!

A big thank you to The Chatty Vets Podcast for a fantastic webinar and to The Webinar Vet for hosting them to explore the chronic GI cases that keep us awake at night, and for sharing their real-world experiences from first-opinion practice.

If you missed the webinar, don’t worry, it is available to watch on demand here : https://thewebinarvet.com/videos/confessions-of-a-gp-vet-the-chronic-gi-cases-that-keep-us-awake-at-night

In the meantime, here’s a throwback to The Chatty Vets discussing the value of a negative test using GIQuest in a previous podcast episode and how it can support decision-making in GI cases. 👇

Persistent diarrhoea. Intermittent vomiting. Weight loss that doesn't quite fit the clinical picture.

Join Dr Brendan Ruban Williams and Dr Charlotte Griffin from The Chatty Vets Podcast at 20:00pm on 29 September as they explore real-life GI cases encountered in first-opinion practice and share the lessons learned from managing some of the chronic GI cases that have kept them awake at night.

Chronic gastrointestinal cases are rarely straightforward. From choosing the most appropriate diagnostics to deciding when a food trial has truly been successful, these patients can challenge even the most experienced clinicians.

The ‘ideal’ diagnostic pathway isn’t always the right one for every patient.

In chronic GI cases, clinical findings are only part of the picture. Patient temperament, owner circumstances, financial considerations and the feasibility of different diagnostic options can all influence what happens next.

Our latest blog explores contextualised care in veterinary GI cases and how combining clinical judgement with objective information can help veterinary teams make informed, individualised decisions.
