Our newest braveheart is Tigger.
Tigger presented to the clinic as an emergency, he was unable to use his right foreleg, had severe facial injuries and was covered in blood, but despite all this, he’d managed to get himself home and through the cat flap!
The Vet thought that his injuries were consistent with an RTA.
He was immediately admitted to the hospital where he was put onto a drip and given pain relief. Once the pain relief had taken effect and we were happy that he was stable, he was given sedation so that we could take x-rays to allow further assessment of his obvious outward injuries.
As you can see from the photos, he had a very nasty fracture to his right humerus. After discussion with his owner about how this could be managed, it was decided that the best course of action would be amputation. Cats manage amazingly well with 3 legs and recovery tends to be much speedier than with a fracture repair.
His soft tissue facial injuries were sutured here and then he was transferred to Dorchester 24h where he had surgery to remove the limb and to place a feeding tube as his face was too sore to eat properly.
His owners were taught how to feed him through the tube and they continued to do this until he was able to eat by himself and at this point the tube was removed.
He is recovering very well despite this massive trauma and will need further surgery to extract broken teeth in the near future but he has been such a trooper and definitely deserves his Braveheart award!
