Have you ever made an ‘emergency collar lead’? 🐕
Today I had to put one to the test!
I was out with my youngest dog 🐶, who was happily enjoying a run around the field. On our final recall, she came back… without her collar! 😳
I searched everywhere but couldn’t find it. The collar was less than two months old, fitted perfectly and definitely wasn’t loose enough to simply slip over her head.
However, my dog 🐶 has a habit of running around before suddenly dropping into a roll and sliding across the grass which makes her so happy and makes me smile 😁. So, I suspect that may have been enough to pop it off!
With no collar and no way to safely walk her home, it was time for an emergency collar lead.
⚠️ SAFETY NOTE: This is an emergency, temporary solution only. Always ensure it is fitted correctly and never leave your dog unattended wearing one. If your dog shows any discomfort or distress stop.
⚠️ The positioning is particularly important.
Take a close look at how the loop goes over my dog’s head. The lead is positioned so that she walked home on my right-hand side. The way it is fitted allows the loop to loosen when there is no tension and tighten when the lead is under tension, helping to keep it securely in place.
If you've never made an emergency collar lead, have a practice now rather than waiting for an emergency! It’s one of those simple skills you hope you never need, but knowing how to make one could help you get your dog safely home if they suddenly lose their collar or break their lead.
