⚠️ 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗞𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗗𝗢𝗚𝗦 – 𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 ⚠️

With temperatures soaring, we'd like to share Nia's story in the hope it helps other dog owners recognise the signs of heatstroke and know what to do.

Nia had only been out for a short walk to the shop at around 9.30am. After just 10 minutes, she became sick, struggled to settle and was breathing very quickly. Her owner, Lynne, initially thought she may have been stung, but when Nia became increasingly unresponsive, she contacted our team for advice.

Our receptionist Angie advised Lynne to check Nia's gums and breathing, and to place her in a cool bath immediately. The team then stayed in regular contact every 15 minutes to monitor Nia's progress before she came in for a veterinary examination.

Thankfully, Nia recovered well 💙

Lynne kindly wanted to share her experience in the hope that it might help even one dog and educate other owners. Heatstroke can happen much faster than many people realise, even after a short walk.

⚠️Signs of heatstroke include:
• Excessive panting
• Difficulty breathing
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Excessive drooling
• Lethargy or collapse
• Weakness or confusion
• Bright red, pale or grey gums

❄️ If you suspect heatstroke:
• Move your dog to a cool, shaded area immediately
• Use cool (not ice-cold) water to actively cool them
• A cool bath can be effective
• Offer small amounts of water if they are able to drink
• Contact your vet immediately

⚠️ Avoid placing wet towels over your dog, as these can trap heat and make cooling less effective.

Please remember:
🐶 Avoid walks during the hottest parts of the day
🐶 Never leave dogs in cars
🐶 Take extra care with flat-faced breeds, older pets, overweight dogs and those with underlying health conditions

Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency and can become fatal within minutes.
Thank you to Lynne for allowing us to share Nia's story and photos in the hope of helping other pets stay safe this summer 💙
