🐈 1. Cats have been known to survive falls from extraordinary heights!
In one famous veterinary study, a cat reportedly survived a fall from the 32nd floor of a building! 😱
Cats have a remarkable righting reflex that helps them orientate their bodies while falling. Of course, falls from any height can cause devastating injuries.
🐈 2. A cat once became the mayor of an Alaskan town!
Stubbs, a ginger cat, became the honorary mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska, in the 1990s and remained a local celebrity until his death in 2017.
Apparently, being a politician doesn't require opposable thumbs! 🤣
🐈 3. Cats have a strange organ that lets them 'taste' smells!
Ever noticed your cat sniff something and then sit there with its mouth hanging open like it's just heard the most scandalous gossip?
That's called the Flehmen response!
They're directing scent molecules towards a specialised sensory organ in the roof of their mouth.
🐈 4. A cat was once officially appointed as a railway stationmaster! 🚂
In Japan, a calico cat called Tama became the stationmaster of Kishi Station in 2007.
She became such a tourist attraction that she's credited with helping revive the struggling railway!
She even had her own little stationmaster's hat! ❤️
🐈 5. Some cats have FOUR ears! 😳
An extremely rare genetic abnormality can cause cats to be born with additional external ear structures.
One famous example was Yoda, a four-eared cat from Illinois.
Imagine hearing the Dreamies packet opening with FOUR ears! 😂
🐈 6. A cat inherited millions from its owner! 💰
Blackie, a British cat, was reportedly left £7 million in his owner's will, with the money entrusted to charities responsible for his care.
Meanwhile, my lot haven't contributed a penny towards the electricity bill! 🤣
🐈 7. Cats have been employed to protect priceless works of art! 🖼️
For centuries, cats have been kept in museums, libraries and historic buildings to control rodents.
The Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg is particularly famous for its resident cats.
🐈 8. Some cats have curly whiskers!
Certain breeds, including the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex, can have unusually short, fragile or curly whiskers.
Some look as though they've had a rather unfortunate appointment at the hairdresser! 😂
🐈 9. A cat once travelled into space! 🚀
In 1963, a French cat called Félicette became the first cat to travel into space.
She survived her suborbital flight and returned to Earth.
She even has a memorial statue honouring her extraordinary journey.
🐈 10. Cats can have kittens with DIFFERENT fathers in the same litter! 😳
It's called heteropaternal superfecundation.
If a female cat mates with multiple males during her fertile period, kittens in the same litter can have different biological fathers.
Now THAT would make an interesting episode of Jeremy Kyle! 🤣🤣
