A Reward Isn't Automatically a Reinforcer
Imagine a dog performs a perfect recall.
The handler gives it a piece of dry food.
The dog eats it.
The handler assumes:
"I've reinforced the recall."
But what if the dog doesn't become more likely to return next time?
Then the food may have been a reward in the everyday sense, but it hasn't necessarily functioned as an effective reinforcer for that behaviour.
This distinction matters.
We should never assume that because we gave something to the dog, we strengthened the behaviour.
We need to look at what the dog does next.

Dont be freightened of making Mistakes, Failure and the Art of Recovery
Every dog makes mistakes.
Every trainer makes mistakes.
And every training journey contains moments when something doesn't go according to plan.
The difference between an inexperienced trainer and an experienced one is often not how many mistakes they encounter.
It is what they do when the mistake happens.
A mistake doesn't have to be a setback.
Handled correctly, it can become information.
Sometimes it can even become part of the learning process.

Training Isn't Just About Obedience
Dog training isn't about making a dog perform a list of commands.
It's about building understanding, communication, engagement and reliability.
A dog that sits perfectly in your kitchen because you've got a piece of food in your hand isn't necessarily trained.
Can that same dog respond when there are distractions?
Can it work when there is no food visible?
Can it stay focused when something exciting happens?
Can you rely on the behaviour when you actually need it?
That's where real training begins.
We need to teach the dog what we want, reinforce the behaviour we like, gradually remove our prompts and then proof the behaviour in different environments and around different distractions.
Training should create a dog that understands the job — not a dog that is simply waiting to see what reward you've got in your hand.
Train the behaviour. Build the relationship. Test the reliability.
That's the difference between a dog that can perform a command and a dog that is genuinely trained. 🐕
