**** STOP WALKING YOUR DOGS IN 30 DEGREES ****

I appreciate this page is mainly associated with horses, but following on from my post about how to look after your horses in this extreme heatwave, I today feel compelled to post about dogs.

It is selfish, idiotic and cruel to take your dogs out into this heat that we currently have. Unable to ride due to the extreme heat, I just popped into Chichester for an ice cream and wander round the shops. I saw at least TEN dogs being dragged around the shops in extreme heat; all were visibly uncomfortable and constantly licking and panting, and one was in distress at being made to stand in the boiling sun on the baking ground whilst the man’s partner went into a shop.

Then, driving home, as my car read 31C, I’ve just seen an elderly retriever being dragged along the pavement. Unable to witness any more cruelty today, I had to say to her to take the dog straight home. Apparently it was fine as she was only walking up and back on the pavement. Had I not been in my car, I would have asked her to take her shoes and socks off, put on a think fur coat, and walk up and down the pavement. And the same for those dragging dogs around the shops!

If you have animals it is your responsibility to ensure that their welfare is never compromised. If this means you can’t go to that BBQ tonight, because you’ve got to walk your dog at 8pm, then, quite frankly, tough s^^t. I don’t care if that’s unprofessional - it will be your vet that battles for your dog as they die of completely avoidable heat stroke in front of their eyes.

If you can’t adjust your lifestyle, then don’t have animals. It doesn’t need two of you to go to the shops - one of you can stay at home with your dog. Leave your dog at home, or if you can’t do that, then don’t go out. Simple. You chose to buy a dog, so it is your responsibility to look after the dog.

I truly thought word was out there enough by now about not walking dogs in extreme heat, that if not common sense, it would at least be common knowledge. Apparently not.

Stop being selfish and idiotic - walk dogs very early in the morning or very late at night.

In March 2024, the previous Government said it would make scanning, checking & reuniting lost & abducted pets more effective by introducing a central portal for approved users-vets, local authorities & police-to search all records instantly, instead of contacting databases individually.

Sad to learn that Sarah Fisher of Tilley Farm has passed away. I did a couple of Tellington Touch workshops with her over 20 years ago. Such a lovely lady who helped me with my first Briard Darcy. Sarah was wonderful with all animals. Rest In Peace Sarah.
