You know when something happens and someone says to you “oh I know EXACTLY how you feel!” Well, whilst we probably wouldn’t actually say that to you, we genuinely DO know how you feel. Staff pets seem to enjoy getting themselves into mischief just as much (if not more) than client pets 🤦🏼♀️
Ava here decided to give Lucy, our RVN, a massive scare when she was caught licking up droplets of left over Lemsip. Lemsip contains paracetamol which is highly toxic to cats so she was rushed in for treatment straight away and we contacted VPIS- this stands for Veterinary Poisons Information Service- for advice.
VPIS decided that the dose she had ingested was unlikely to be toxic and she was over the advised period of time for inducing emesis so we went to Treatment Plan B!
We took bloods (using a Likilix tube to distract her, as per our cat friendly policy ❤️) to check where her levels were sitting (we call this a “baseline”) and then gave activated charcoal and Denamarin. The activated charcoal coats the stomach and guts to prevent further absorption of the toxin and ulceration and the Denamarin helps to protect the liver. She went home to be monitored closely and came back 2 days later for a check up. We retested her bloods to see if there were any changes and checked to see if she had developed any symptoms. Luckily her bloods were still fine and she had no symptoms so was allowed to go home to continue being monitored- does this count as for RVN as “working from home”?😆
A week later her bloods were checked again to make sure there had been no adverse developments and it was decided that her upcoming neutering would be postponed until she was 100% fine and signed off.
2 weeks later she came back for one final check up having finished her course of Denamarin and one last blood sample was taken and compared before being officially discharged with her neuter surgery date rebooked for later on ❤️
During this time, Lucy was STRESSED 🫣 being a vet nurse and working in practice absolutely does not make us more level-headed or relaxed when it comes to our own animals (in fact it probably makes us worse!) and we feel absolutely every emotion that our clients and owners do when their pets are going through something.
So, if any of us ever does say “oh I know how you feel”…. We really, genuinely do! ❤️
